Based on initiative of the German Organising Committee’s Secretary General, Carl Diem , Olympic fire was lit by means of magnifying glass on the Chronos mountain in Greek Olympia and 3075 runners took part in a relay run all the way to the Imperial capital. In order to avoid reproaches for racist laws, the German organisers invited Jewish fencer Helen Mayer into the German team from her exile.
