For the last two mornings, it's been my turn to get up at the crack of dawn, and go to the farm 5 minute's drive away where my daughters keep their pony. I wouldn't mind, but it's been freezing cold with torrential rain.
Apart from that, the pony's in one of her moods-I've been bitten on the a***, the shoulder and the hand so far. After changing her rug, putting her out in the field and mucking out her stall, I need to wash and change before driving 30 miles to get to university.
I don't remember what my bed looks like, and I'm b***** sure John Wayne never had this trouble.....

Sounds fun Gordon, a girl I know has a horse (we call it a pony but technically she is a horse, well, tell a lie, I call her a 'silly bloody donkey' most of the time) that goes through those 'moods' regularly. A mare with PMT, just what I want to learn to ride on!
On the up side, erm, actually I can't think of one. Then again, I am online at 3AM, haven't had a decent nights sleep in weeks and need to read a book on the crusades and get a report on it written up this week as well as writing 3 letters and going on exercise with the TA. So, I guess we are all looking for silver linings.

Framert,
Never thought of that!
Stefan,
I'm assuming the "silly bloody donkey" is the one with four legs?!

True Gordon, but one day she will work out that 'silly bloody donkey' and 'daft mare' don't refer to the same individual
Anyhow, written the letters and have a tub of cookie dough ice cream in the fridge, silver lining here I come.
Whilst we are on the topic, today whilst hunting around the History Dept at my university I stopped outside the door of an office to chat to a mate. I broke off mid-sentence when I saw the name on the door, Prof. I Kershaw

Nice one!
Last week, the Centre for Second World War Studies at Glasgow had a seminar on the Battle for Antwerp in 1944. Can't remember who the guest speaker was, but I heard staff raving about him afterwards. Must try and get to one of their seminars one day.
The History Society recently started back up for this year, so I'm going to have to persuade them that they can afford to bring Ian Kershaw up...

Mahross, the worrying thing is that I am rather getting into pre-1500 history at the moment!
Gordon, unfortunatly (for me) he is on a sabbatical year at the moment, he is due back in autumn 2005 though, just in time for my second year!

Good stuff Green!
I'm in the third year of an MA in History at Glasgow, and most of my modules are mediaeval. Not too keen on modern history, hate getting politics rammed down my throat...
Most interesting one so far is "Rebellion, Treason and Political Opposition under the Anglo-Norman and Plantagenet Kings 1066-1352". Much more interesting than the title suggests... honest..

Well, might as well join in here too. Just started my first year in History at the Uni of Amsterdam... 4 years to my MA, and we started with the Greek and Romans....Good fun!

And here I am knee deep in crusaders and arabs, though that is tempered by a fair amount of philosophy for the other half of my degree (at the moment we are debating whether killing is justified in war, do I see a trend emerging here?)

Funnily enough Stefan, our lot run a course called "The Justification of War"...
Topical or what?

Yeah, though it is rather entertaining to compare recent conflicts in the middle east to, say, the crusades . Now they have to find WMD and all kinds of other bollocks, then they said 'god is giving you an opportunity to redeem yourself'.

Yep-course is actually called "Mediaeval theories of a Just War", so it's even more ironic!
On that subject, didn't they claim to have found the "Holy Lance" that pierced Christ's side inside one of the cities they were besieging? Something tells me it was either Antioch or Constantinople? Lovely piece of propaganda......

Yeah, I seem to remember it actually Antioch, on the 14th of june the 'lance' was found and, though all the clerics claimed it was fake the crusaders charged around like loonenys and won. Ironically it couldn't possibly have been the real lance, since Roman soldiers didn't use lances of that sort. The relic was more likely to be a pilum or some such weapon.

That's assuming it was even Roman to start with. Faking "relics" was big business. It's often said that if you put together all the pieces of the "True Cross" that circulated in mediaeval Europe, you'd have a rainforest like the Amazon Basin!
Anyway, the pony nearly got me in the face this morning...and that was after I tethered her! Know any good glue factories?
