I'm starting this to (hopefully) free up bandwidth elsewhere....
A row broke out in Scotland yesterday around the no smoking ban. Reason? The MSP who wanted to make organ donation compulsory is miffed that his brainchild got pushed down the list of priorities!
Under his scheme, everyone will have been deemed to have consented to their organs being re-used after death UNLESS they physically opt out in writing first.I'm led to believe that relatives will have very little input, but feel free to prove me wrong.

What's going on in Scotland!? Compulsory organ donation? That's crazy - sounds like something China would mandate! Next you'll have organ harvesting of political prisoners?

What a stupid tit. Forget the 'nanny state', this is waaay further than that. Talk about the slippery slope!

Wouldn't the reason of it be that George Orwell was Scottish instead of being a British born in India?

Erich,
Doesn't surprise me at all mate.
Drache,
Completely agree. I spend my days running books on what they're going to try and ban next...and I dont usually gamble.
Freddie,
Think you're right about the Scottish connection.

Didn't Monty Python do that one in their movie "The Meaning of Life"? That scene where they show up on some guy's doorstep and ask: "Are you Mr. XYZ (or whatever his name is)?" When he replies that yes he is they pin him down on a table saying "We need your spleen..." and promptly begin to saw him open to remove it.....

I have a money making idea for you Gordon. Apply for a grant from the Scottish government to study the effects of tourism on the breeding habits of the Loch Ness Monster. You could declare it to be an endangered species and apply for anouther grant to study ways to make it safe for future generations.
I think the current group you have in power would go right along with it and give you the money.

Or Portugal! We have compulsory organ donation after death unless you state otherwise in writing while you still have time, that is ante mortem.
You guys are overreacting, for sure, because nobody here sees any corpse grabbing races on the streets.
If you're young and died in a car accident you may have some good parts that can be cannibalized ( I knew you'd love the expression!), like a kidney or a cornea. So if you're not going to need it, why the hell refuse it?
The alternative is that it was practically impossible to get any spare parts and a clandestine market might develop, like in some other benighted places.
So, I'm a blood donor, and after I'm dead if they decide to implant my brain on someone else, that's okay with me, but the Lord help the guy who gets it
Maybe this is what you get in an octopus stewing culture!
The way things are I have to start pestering Otto to get me a wee little Portuguese flag in the message icon list as well

I'm a blood and organ donor myself. They'll chop me once I pass away and use me as a spare part supplier… I just don't think me eyes or any part of it would be useful, I'm bloody blind! And my kidneys won't be of much use if I keep drinking 12 cups of coffee a day.

DWD, We've had those in Britain for years. Trust me, half the time they're either broken, switched off or facing the wrong way!
The Scottish Parliament today heard a bill from a Labour MSP which would make it illegal to stop any woman breast-feeding in public. If successful, any business which stopped the practise would not only face a heavy fine, but also the possibility of their license being revoked...permanently.

I suspect it won't be long before somebody starts using flying surveillance drones (like the military does in Iraq) to fill in those gaps.

Bit of common sense here. Breast feeding is perfectly normal and anyone who gets any form of titillation (pun intended )from it has the 'problem' not the mother. For far too long we have had these women shunted off into dingy toilets or dark corners because some busybody thinks it 'might offend'. Tough. I note that a lot of Muslim women do it when out and about but because of the style of clothing worn it is not obvious to all. Why is it a problem? Is it 'dirty'?

People over here generally just look away in consideration of the mother's privacy. Simple as that.
