Default One tough man

FOXNews.com - Farmer Cuts off Right Arm With Pocket Knife to Save Life - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News

Not long after I graduated from HS, a younger boy who lived in the area and was still in school stayed out to help the family gather corn. The combine he was operating jammed and he got out to try to clear it, but left the picker in gear. As he pulled on the jammed corn stalks, his right arm got caught by the gatherer and started pulling him in. He put his left foot on the machine to pull back against it and it slipped in also. The net result was the corn picker severed his right arm mid-forearm and his left leg just above the ankle. He was a good 30 miles from town, by himself with a manual shift truck. He managed to drive himself to the hospital and survived.

A while ago out West a hiker had the same sort of thing happen to him. A boulder he was climbing on (wedged in a canyon) shifted and trapped his right arm. Out there, there is no help, not to mention the flash-floods. He cut off his arm too after about 3 days and managed to crawl out of the park and get help.

I am always thinking of things that could happen because I always want to be prepared for the unknown, so I would like to think that I could do such a thing but one never knows. Kind of like those who give their lives for others by falling ontop a live grenade.

Like this Medal of Honor Recipient, who survived that very thing.

He's a man's man.

Jacklyn H. Lucas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the MEDAL OF HONOR to
PRIVATE FIRST CLASS JACKLYN H. LUCAS
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE
for service as set forth in the following CITATION:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, Fifth Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands 20 February 1945. While creeping through a treacherous, twisting ravine which ran in close proximity to a fluid and uncertain front line on D-plus-1 Day, Private First Class Lucas and three other men were suddenly ambushed by a hostile patrol which savagely attacked with rifle fire and grenades. Quick to act when the lives of the small group were endangered by two grenades which landed directly in front of them, Private First Class Lucas unhesitatingly hurled himself over his comrades upon one grenade and pulled the other one under him, absorbing the whole blasting force of the explosions in his own body in order to shield his companions from the concussion and murderous flying fragments. By his inspiring action and valiant spirit of self-sacrifice, he not only protected his comrades from certain injury or possible death, but also enabled them to rout the Japanese patrol and continue the advance. His exceptionally courageous initiative and loyalty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Lucas and the United States Naval Service.[1] /S/ HARRY S. TRUMAN
