Where Liberty dwells, is my Country. Where have all the Patriots gone? and i'm NOT talking about that Football team ;-))
"Where Liberty Dwells, is my Country." as said be a great American by the name of Benjamin Franklin. Doesn't that make you feel proud to be a Citizen of this Country? Those words are so important and are really needed to be tought to today's school children.
Other great quotes (and thank you Gent Colonel) for the idea.
I don't know about the average person who lives here and that's a member of this website but, whenever I hear or read those words above, and that of those I will be listing below, it makes my blood run hotter and my heart beat stronger.
While doing much sparring with some fine folks from the USA and from the U.K here lately-(this is directed only at the ones from the USA) ;-)) i've noticed the lack of loyalty and patriotism shown by a few "American" Citizens here. That's OK because ALL of the Veterans who fought for our Country GAVE them that right to do so.
One thing that I wish our Country had, were more of the same kind of Patriots that we used to have who are long since at Peace, almost forgotten by many and appreciated by a seemingly....few.
David Glasogow Farragut said this famous line which is one of my most favorite of all lines: "Damn the Torpedoes, full speed ahead."
Patrick Henry also has quoted some very good words such as: "I regret that I have but one life, to give to my Country," just before the British hanged him on charges (in their opinions) of Treason (and probably other things) but in our opinions, he was a true Patriot.
More great quotes from great men who struggled so hard to make this place independant from England, are:
"I have not yet begun to fight!" almost brings tears to my eyes because it makes me feel so proud to be an American.
"Give me Liberty, or give me death." These fine words are probably still in the minds of millions of Americans today, because of these troubled times.
"Don't Tread On Me" is another great quote from our past history. In one way of thinking, this means to "keep ones mitts out of my affairs." "Don't tell me how to live," etc etc.
All of these great quotes to me, are how I also feel about that famous Iwo Jima Flag-raising by those five Marines and one Navy Corpsman. Everytime I see that, it always makes me feel so proud to be an American who also loves his Country.
One thing I am sorry for, is that we have many many lousy politicians that only want to deepen their pockets at everyones expense while selling out their own Country to those who have not earned what we give.
Those same lousy politicians, seemingly are trying their best to make everyone out there-hate us for various reasons?
Anyway, my question is really to anyone and how they feel about their Country. The question is, How much of a Patriot, do you consider yourself to be?
I'd give my eye-teeth to be able to visit some of the Revolutionary War battlefields, as well as the many other historical sites that are everywhere in those States that originally made up the 13 Colonies.
I know one thing that our Country needs badly is, more people who are much like:
Daniel Boone, Ben Franklin, John Hancock, Patrick Henry, Nathan Hale, "Light Horse" Harry Lee, George Washington, John Adams, Ethan Allen & his Green Mountain Boys and Paul Revere; just to name a few.
Any comments will be welcome.
Best regards--Carl.

Through and through. This is tough to talk about is such a casual way but the well being of this country is on my mind every day.
I wonder at times why it is they way it is. I hear you loud and clear.

Thank you Tik, and I too are in wonderment of why things are the way they are? All of those Gents mentioned above, must be pretty disappointed at whats happening to the fruits of their labor.
I like to imagine that the spirits of Daniel Boone, Patrick Henry and Paul Revere etc, are around when topics like this are discussed. ;-))

Carl, I completly agree with what you say. These are my two favorite quotes from that era, with the latter my favorite period, any era. It bothers me to see a general disinterest in whats going on in our own country. It seems people would rather ignore the problem than to take time out of there busy lives to do something about it.

I couldn't agree more! It's the "that's for the politicians to deal with" that ticks me off! Those buggers work for me! And I'm gonna remind them of it every chance I get, and I do! I do this, because I love this country, and want it to be as good as I know it can be! But Carl, you are right, we need more people like those to get "us" back in line!
I consider myself a very patriotic person, but when you put up names like that Carl, it makes me think I need to be more patriotic!!
thanks Carl!

Re: Where Liberty dwells, is my Country. Where have all the Patriots gone? and i'm NOT talking about that Football team ;-))
Thank you Mike and thank you Scott. ;-))
Mike, those really are some mightly powerful words aren't they? I remember learning those words in my second grade class tought by: Mr. Rod Guidrey. This teacher instilled many things in us that I try to live by and hopefully have not forgotten too much. I agree with you fully and that disinterest of those in whats going on, never fails to amaze me.
Scott, Quite right my friend and I fully agree. Something you said that I had not thought of is when you said and in other words that putting up names like the above, also makes me feel the need to be more Patriotic. One improvement is that I need to get a new and bigger flag to fly outside my home. I have one but, it's kind of hard to see from the street.
I wish Mr. Guidrey was here to see that at least some of what he tought, was not forgotten. It's kind of embarassing to admit, that I have spent much time in NOT thinking about those Gents. That will change though.

Until they have major election reform in this country you will always have people on the take. Also as long as there are political appointees in government you will have people on the take. If the federal civil service system is not also overhauled you will have incompetent employees at all levels.
I worked as a seasonal IRS employee and they had employees who used a credit card provided for business expensives to get escort services to their motels. Do you think they are fired ? Think again. Anouther employee watched movies on her DVD at her desk. Was she fired ? No. Just moved to a different section for a few months and then back to her old tricks again.
They need to make it so average income people can run for office and not have to depend on contributions. Corporations who donate the money to the canidates want something in return. Simple as that.
The voters need to be alot less lazy. They let the news networks and Republican or Democratic parties tell them who to vote for or who has the slickest ad campainge on TV.
Anouther problem in my view is that the Federal Government is so massive that no one human can manage it all. There are well over 5000 agencies and departments dealing with all kinds of wierld stuff.
Having said all that, I am glad people like you Carl are still around. When your type dye off then the country will be gone.

While on the subject of patriotism what is the feeling of the people in the USA towards the troops in afghanistan, and iraq compared to the abuse and hate many troops faced coming home from the vietnam war.

No, at least not where I live. On the backs of cars around here you will see the yellow ribbon that says "Support Our Troops". Pastors pray for them during services, families openly display window service flags, in their homes or on their cars. I see articles in the local paper, quite often, about a young boy or girl who started a cookie campaign, or something of that sort to send over to our soldiers.

Holy sheet, I have an ID card, tax card, social security card, national health card, voting card, driver's license, passport, and quite frankly I don't feel oppressed at all!
Actually I feel quite safe because it's pratically impossible to exist anything like identity theft over here. Even if there is another guy with the same name as myself, all card numbers will be different so we're easy to tell apart!
I'm sorry, but you are sounding like a bunch of paranoids!
