Question Technical question, i'm curious if this happenes to everybody when.....

Just curious but, I was wondering if this happens to everybody when they do this:

OK, some people provide links to other sites and or to some article or something posted somewhere on-line. As you all know (most of you anyway) I use the Public Library computers and they aren't exactly the best ones in the world to use but, is currently my only way of getting on-line to pester you all. ;-))

Anyway, I noticed that when I click the provided link to some article posted somewhere else on the internet, that after getting in and reading what we are supposed to read, that when I click back to get back to this site, that it takes a few minutes to be let back here and then it still takes several minutes to get into another topic and make a posting. Sometimes it automatically logs me out of this site.

Anyone else here experiance this?

Best reagrds-Carl.

Have you tried a cleanup on that computer you use? A disk cleanup followed by a defragmentation, on Windows XP terms?

Ok, you can't expect much on a public computer but...

Also a slow collective connection plus a quantity of concurrent users is not the best of worlds.

I bought myself a wireless connection to Vodaphone and I'm happy with it, not very efficient costwise but at least I'm free from cables.

Hi Miguel, thanks for the info but, nope, they don't allow us to do anything to their computers. I am hoping to be set-up at my new home in about two or so months. I have a refurbished computer and will be looking at buying my first new one within the next several months. ;-)) I was thinking of getting a lap-top but, have heard more cons than pros on having one.

Take care and best regards-Moi.

Carl do not look into a lap-top just yet, give them a bit more time. for what you want you need a Dell with XP

your call of course,. and yes Mr. M is correct, those library PC's need a good cleaning they are probably full of choked out porno viruses from the kiddies seeing things they should not be seeing

Carl, I sometimes have this problem as well, though I attribute it to one of the computers I use being dial up and that is when I have most problems.

Hi Erich, Mike,

Erich, thanks for the good advice. I've been hearing alot of bad stuff dealing with laptops-so your right, i'll most likely get a Dell.

Mike, thanks as well. That dial-up servive might be what is it causing these problems. I remember my Sister had idial-up on the computer at her home and I remember that they used to get "kicked off" the internet a lot. The only time I didn't see that happen, was when they were playing games.

One good thing I found out about the libraries computer system is that they just recently upgraded somehow and loading time is a bit faster.

I also just tried a link in one of Kai's postings which was a Finnish site that had photo's of Germans in Finland. Well, I got into the site easily enough but, had the same problems as listed above, when trying to get back to the site. This time I had to reenter the site but was not logged off. ;-))

the only issue I have encountered is when I initially get to this site, it does take longer to load but not long enough to piss me off and I am using a laptop with a wireless card through my mobile provider.

Carl, before clicking on a link, hold down the Ctrl key, this will open the link in a new window. When you have finished you can close this window and go straight back to the forum.

I'm gonna throw in my two cents here and advise against a Microsoft machine, when this current machine dies, I'll be going to a Mac! Most of my friends have them and they don't have the problems microsoft does! Anyway, that's it!

Carl, go buy a cheapo HP or Dell at your local electronics store when one is on sale. Get the low end package deal. Stuff an extra memory card in it and buy a decent video card for it based on whatever will fit in the few expansion slots available.

This will be 100 times better than the public access ones at the library and cost about $600 to $700 total.

The problem you are having is that Windows is "timing you out" if you are not actively using a frame for a period of time (including getting into and out of it) Windows will assume you are not there and time out the frame and deactivate the link. Its just one of those stupid features of many in Windows.

Agreed, it's all about what you need your PC for. Laptops are great as mobile word processors and internet machines but if you dont need the mobility don't bother, just go for something that sits on your desk and can be fixed if it goes wrong.

Thanks Ike, John, Scott, TA & Stefan,

Hi Ike, the same thing happens to me everytime I first get to this and for that matter, any other site. I timed it today and, to get into my Yahoo account, it took me almost 10 minutes to reply to my first email.

Hi John, thanks for that info, I will try it as soon as I get into some topic that has a link to click on. I know these computers do allow to do what you said because I have seen some kids in here who had miltiple screens at the same time.

Hi Scott, I "got weaned" on computers using a MacIntosh. Also, when I was in Collecge (too many years ago to want to admit to) the Macs were the first computers we learned anything on-and I loved them then. That was before microsoft or whoever, has those icons to click on in order to do whatever you wanted to do and the IBMs and such had it where you had to type in all kinds of gobbeldygook in order to do something. I could do almost anything on those Macs.

Hi TA, I do have a computer which is about 6 years old that I bought from a friend who refurbished it. I can't remember what kind it is since it's still in its box because im moving soon. My friend upgraded it making it do other things I need such as dubbing movies from VHS to DvD and such. I plan on using this computer until I can save enough for a new one-which im hoping to do so before the end of the year--barring no serious financial setbacks happen to me before then ;-)) When the time comes for a new computer, i'll refer to what you Gents are telling me before I take the plunge.

Hi Stefan, what you say makes sense. I don't really have the need to be mobile, and you guys just made up my mind for me though. I'll stick with a desk-top computer. For about a year now, the City I live in has had Wi-Fi service all over town but a lot of people were having trouble using it because of I guess, not enough of them were installed around town? Also, there were many complaints about something called: "Drop-outs" I think?

Heh heh, where were you guys when I was in College? I could have learned much from you all. ;-D

for browsing the interweb, I use an old desktop, I cleared the hard drive, and installed UBUNTU linux ( just google ubuntu to find it) which is completley free and comes with firefox web browser and numerous other apps. It takes 1/10 of the time to boot up that xp does, and this is running on a cronky machine. If it goes wrong I just reformat the hard disk and reinstall in 20 mins..........

Yahoo is having issues all around for the past week. Their website is all messed up. Their email is not working at all. They are hosting my website and it has been hanging up. Just an FYI.

BTW, did this issue with the previous page timing out a new thing or did it always do that?

Carl , it's looks like you have a spyware cookie on your computer. This will pester you when you use the internet and will try to force to redirect you to certain sites instead of others, slow you down and you will get sites you did not request and have to try others several times, making detours to get there. I have downloaded a great anti-spyware called Hitman-pro. It's free and combines most effecient anti spywares available. By using this you will seriously clean your harddisc. Enclosed:
wikipedia article about it and a link for the download.

Hitman Pro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Download Hitman Pro 2.7.0.0 RC2 - Hitman Pro is a free software ...

Also load lavasoft's adaware if you don't have it. Its free and I've found it finds things Norton and other name brand software don't find. Besides, free is good.

Hi Gents, and thanks for all the advice-which I will be printing out and keeping.

Grim, i've never heard of ubuntu, but I will do some looking around for info about it. As some wiseman above said, free is good ;-))

Hi Ike, thanks for that. Were still having problems here w/ yahoo. Today it took about 15minutes to log in. After finally getting in, it still took about 10 minutes brfore I could even start to delete some of that daily Spam I get.

I've had problems in the past with that timeing out thing. For the past year or so, i've been having that happen with my account. I thought it could be something to do w/ the library system since they are always changing, adding and deleting things. About a week or so ago, just after they did whatever it takes to make things faster, everything was perfect, fast, and I actually had about 1/2 my allotted time left-over to mess around with. Im not usedf to that. Anyway, that lasted only 3-4 days and then back to the very slow stuff.

Hi Skipper, TA, thanks guys and i'll also look up those as well. Im not yet electronically savvy but hope to be much more wiser before the end of this year.

Don't worry Carl: hitman-pro is user friendly. The download is automatic and once you launch it, it does the job for you ALONE from asking questions to giving answers and deleting theads. It takes a couple of hours or even more , to browse your hardisc though , but it can remove a lot of crap , such as old cookies and spies that considerably slow down your computer.
