Computer assistance, please.
Can someone tell me how to input those special German characters on the keyboard? (e.g the A with the dots above it and the U with the dots above it)

Re: Computer assistance, please.
I have a continental European keyboard so it may be different on your U.S. one. I have a UMLAUT (ä) next to the "p" . I type it when I use "Shift" (capital letters) then take off the shift again. It will be there but will not show until you type your voyel. Then when you have typed your voyel your Umlaut+voyel will make the dotted voyel apprear. If the sign is on another placez the manoeuver shouldbe the same. If not you can download this from the internet. Hope this helps.

Re: Computer assistance, please.
Joe,
For your purposes, the Umlaut can just be replaced by adding "e" after the vowel in question. That is why you sometimes see Goering...Doenitz...Raeder...Etc.
Additionally, you can use a double "s" instead of the character that looks like a gothic capital B.

The only way I know how to do it is use WORD, if you have this program go to insert and select symbol.
I use WORD 2003 but there is a free version called OpenOffice but I have no idea if the free version can do it, any how here is the link.

Seriously now, in your case I'd use the Windows Character Map in System Tools.

Re: Computer assistance, please.
Ask Erich when he gets back from his vacation. I have seen him post how to do it here somewhere on several occasions. As far as I know, he has an American keyboard for his 'Puter.

Re: Computer assistance, please.
By the way, what is the difference between an American and Eurpean keyboard?
To clear things out, mine is European.

Re: Computer assistance, please.
I'm not sure but, I think the European keyboard has a different key set-up than ours. For instance, the top row of letter keys on the keyboard im using are: qwertyuiop, and (not saying they are but just using it as an example) but the European keyboard might have different letters on their top row than we do and they might be like these: asdfghjkl etc etc. In other words, im not sure what the diff/ is to say for sure?

Re: Computer assistance, please.
On the US keyboard the easy way is to use ASCI keyed numbering.
Press the "alt" key and then:
ä = 132
ü = 129
ö = 148
ß = 225
Those are the basic ones you need 90% of the time.

Are you sure it's the ctrl? I use alt. To get these characters, I push alt, hold it down and then press the character while still holding down alt.

Re: Computer assistance, please.
The number pushing is both fun and frustraing, you can find letter and symbols you nver thought existed, yet at the same time, trying to remember the right combination can be a real pain.
