What do you do for a living?
OK -- My where are you from question generated interest for a while but that interest has since sputtered. So now I ask, what do you do for a living? I have been a lawyer for the past 15 years but I am now working on developing a web start-up with some friends.

Drill holes in skulls and all in all try to help people. A friend of mine keeps the patient in anesthesia while I drill. usually I know what I´m doing.

Network Administrator now. Was a surgery nurse in previous years, showing people like Kai where to drill their holes, plus drilling a few myself in other bones.

Re: What DID you do for a living?
As you may have noticed I've taken the liberty of modifying the title to include those of us who have finally retired.
In 1936 I started work at the age of thirteen and for a year worked in Fleet Street for Associated Press as a "photo-runner boy".
A wide variety of jobs then followed, including a month as a junior porter at the Queen's Hotel in Brighton
Whilst awaiting to be called up, I drifted into my father's business in the clothing industry and on release from the Forces in 1947 studied Pattern Cutting. This resulted in my becoming a Production Controller for the next 26 years in ever larger companies. For 12 years I then ran my own small company, retiring in 1985 when my first grandchild was born.
I now lead a very busy life and wonder how I ever found time for work.
My favourite hobby is watching my family grow

Re: What do you do for a living?
Ehh being 16 I should wait for a couple years to respond to this hehe but I won't.I'm going to be a Junior in High school in September 2008. As a upperclassman I get to choose my classes now. Over the next 2 years I plan to take U.S History(mandatory but I plan to build on it), 20th Century(elective), Mythology(elective), and maybe Ethics & Morality(elective). That along with standard English, French, Math, Science, and Art. In College I'm going to focus on History & Political Science. With that I don't know what career path I will take yet.
As a young growing person I genuinely appreciate any suggestions for a career based around History/Politics for looking ahead.

Good for you. Giving up an evil occupation for something far more glamourous and productive! You have risen above drug dealer and used car salesman finally in the ranks of onerous employment!
As for myself: I work for the Department of Justice at a Federal prison teaching construction trades to the inmates (it pays surprisingly well). I was hired to teach them electronics but they were generally too !@%@% stupid (putting it mildly) to learn that subject. Having been in the US Navy for 27 years and a CPO for a good part of that it was a good fit as there isn't much difference between old-time sailors and inmates.....
I also do general and electrical contracting on the side. Again, my day job helps when hiring day labor.....at least I can recognize the tats and weed out the real losers quickly now....

Hahaha age is no matter
Currently pumping gas for people at a Co-Op on the numba 1 highway (in Canada it stretches pretty much coast to coast)
Its a interesting job.. 'cept alot of people do not know anything about cars so its kinda of fusterating. Actually the whole job is stressful because lack of human intelligence sometimes (oops I said that outloud ) But its always fun to talk to people from America. Because people from Texas being in Manitoba seems... really out of place.

Re: What do you do for a living?
Systems Analyst I, pretty much...for the CIA. No, just kidding. Really. Systems Analyst I for a company....basic desktop support, smart-home tech research, mitel phone system guru (once its installed) in the office, etc. Pretty basic stuff really.
Not going to make a career out of it though. I think i've decided i need to get into the writing industry (what i majored in, in college) even if it means going to NZ to find such a job. Or do something that is outdoorsy...cant take being couped up in an office all day. Well, here in Orlando it is def. better then working outside in 90+ degree heat + 90%+ humidity...

Re: What do you do for a living?
Spent most of the past 20 years as a salesman in several different industries. The last one was CDW, sold computers for them for 3 years, got tired of that worked on a hog farm for a year then became a truck driver. Now I am waiting for the construction season to start, don't ask it's not pretty, so I can go back to work driving a concrete truck. Got a job for me?!

Re: What do you do for a living?
Sure Bigfun. If you're out in AZ I'll put you to work. I'm about to start a 120' retaining wall varying in height from 2' to 6' (not including footers...these use a calculated 6 yards of concrete alone not including full grout) using about 1000 block. I also have a hill roughly 12 feet high and about 100 feet in diameter to chop down using the back hoe and another lot needing another 16" of fill in 3 to 4" lifts (its 72 x 75 in area) to be put in and compacted.
When the excavation is done its time on these two lots for utilities and septic to go in.
If the permits come in I also have a garage conversion to guest house for a customer and another hill side lot where the customer wants a two car garage with room additon over added to existing. This one includes grading a new driveway and removing an existing driveway.
I just picked up yesterday a small remodel to install a new entry door (including jam and all new trim) along with a sliding door conversion to single panel french doors.

Re: What do you do for a living?
I've been in various industries over the years: material management for hospital, heavy equipment buyer (D8 Caterpillars my specialty), steel foundry, municipal; as well as, administrative assistant/finance for the oil industry, newspaper, corrections, information technology, legal aid, construction, Veterans Affairs. Currently administrative assistant for Corrections (specializing in Excel and statistical analysis) - but not in an institution. Dream jobs would be working in history or art, combining research, writing, and creating.

Re: What do you do for a living?
Being 23 I'm still taking my degree (bit of a slacker in the first 2 years I'm afraid). I'm majoring in Astronomy with a minor in Geographical information systems (GIS). Next year I'll start my master degree is GIS and will try to get employed in the telecomunications area or as a project consultant regarding planning and such...
I'll probably work in Eastern Europe or in Africa seing as most European companies of the sort are expanding there (not that Icomplain tough ).
Cheers...
