Russians approve of censoring media
Silobreaker: Most Russians approve of censoring media: poll
Nearly 60% of Russians agree with state censorship of the media, according to an opinion poll this week, arguing it was necessary to tackle misinformation, violence and vulgarity.
Results from the survey for the Russian Centre for Public Opinion Research (VTSIOM) showed that 26% of respondents said censorship was "absolutely necessary", and a further 32% called it "fairly necessary". Only 8% said it was "completely unnecessary.

Re: Russians approve of censoring media
Being someone who works in the Research industy I always find these polls quite funny. They think that 60% of a certain number of people polled represent the nation as a whole. I can guarantee you that if taken again with a different group with different demographics the results would not be the same LOL.

I'm not surprised to read these results. It's their way of life.

Who know really? With polls you can get pretty much any result you want. Just by the type of questions, How they were worded. And like I said the demographics too. How many were polled. Ages for example or education, ect. Social backgrounds How many were born during the span of the Soviet Union and who were born towards the end? Variables

Polls can not be trusted at all, I agree.

I guess so with elections as well. I think I´ll never figure out how George W Bush was elected twice....

Re: Russians approve of censoring media
I love the question, "Are you happy with the way the country is headed now." That question in itself answers nothing without siginificant followon questions. I may be unhappy because the government had too much influence, while you may be unhappy because it doesn't have enough. But then the news readers interpret the answers to fit whatever agenda they are espousing.

Re: Russians approve of censoring media
Well, we do don't we? I mean you start with the 2200 watershed, then there are various commissions who vet shows to keep out gratuitous sex and violence, not to mention swearing and other forms of 'violence and vulgarity.' Of course all the legislation against 'inciting racial hatred' is another form of censorship.
So why should it be surprising that people approve of censoring the media? We already do it to hold of exactly the things listed by the poll. It's just a question of extent.

Re: Russians approve of censoring media
True enough Stefan. We always have with either the law (right-wrong), Church (decent-indecent), or in the papers (truth-lies), on the media (information-manipulation), or with movie ratings (sensitive/impressionable-give it to me straight up).
The questions alway were/are "Where" to draw the line,....and "Who" draws that line, and is it forever ?
Who thinks they're GOD ? (I'll take that one back, because many do)
Who deserves to be God ?
The pen is mightier than the sword.
Radio is mightier than the pen (it reaches farther, costs less & you don't have to read)
TV is mightier than the radio (it has greater entertainment value, plain and simple)
Internet has everything (usually without censorship from any arena), with the exception that you need to purchase equipment, a service, have a power source, and a base of peace.
Censorship has a way of moving forward like a lava flow. Because it moves so slowly (in most cases) you're "lulled" into the feeling that there's no danger. The truth is diametrically opposite, there is nothing more totally devastating....once it arrives....and there's no going back.
that is without a "Cataclysmic" changing of the guard !

It's like the dumb debate shows on the telly. You have two options. Either phone and leave you opinion on an answering machine that goes out loud as the show ends, or the even more pointless SMS polls going live: Do you want more taxes??

Re: Russians approve of censoring media
Some people would rather have censored, false news than uncensored truth that they don't want to hear.

Re: Russians approve of censoring media
That does rather rely on the idea that, sans censorship, the news we are given would be truth

Re: Russians approve of censoring media
I guess some sort of censoring is ok, and today the press can go to extremes trying to make headline news, from awful lies to pure pornography. Still, personally, I´d not want that all media was under state control like it is in some countries. And if some newspapers did some individual thinking, they would be closed. That is not right, in my view.
It´s ok if the politicians lie, they often do. But if the papers always quote the same thing as the only truth, that is wrong to put it mildly.
Juts my opinion.
