Bad Night Last Night
I'm up, about to go get my male dog out of the animal emergency clinic. It's almost 6am here and I have to have him out by 7am. He was bitten by a either a rattlesnake or copperhead last night around 10pm while in my back yard.
I got him there in time last night, the vet thinks. More to come.

Re: Bad Night Last Night
Hope he gets better soon. This is the major fear I have when I do yard work. So far, no venomous snakes but I did go outside one morning to find a 7 foot gator in my front yard. Fortunately the kids were not outside playing. So much for the security of a walled subdivision!

Re: Bad Night Last Night
Firstly, thanks everyone for your concern. It is appreciated. He seems to be doing well this morning and is sleeping on the cool tile of the kitchen floor right now. He's an English Shepherd and about 4 years old. This is a picture of Jack on my driveway.
The female, Dixie, is about 6 months old. It was her prolific barking last night that got me out there to see what was going on. I was about to scold her for making so much noise, but the bark was different and then Jack all but crawled up to me, whimpering loudly, just begging me to help him. I got him in the house and could see that he had been bitten in the mouth/tongue. Had Dixie not barked, we probably would not have found him until this morning (probably dead) since we were getting in the bed and would not have heard Jack crying out for us. Beau, our Sheltie, was concerned, but would not have tried to call us, we don't think. I got him to the Emgergency Clinic inside of an hour, which made all the difference in the world for him. The bill was $1400.
I have the pest man coming today to treat the yard to run off snakes and put some traps out for the ones that might not get the message. They can live in the woods all the want, just stay out of my yard.

I own two and went outside looking for the critter, but it was long gone by then. Hoes work well with them also.

Re: Bad Night Last Night
Hi Jeff, glad to hear your Pooch is doing better. I too usd to have an English Shepherd. These Dogs make for some great pals. I called my dog "Friskey." Long ago, we used to go for very long walks. If I told Friskey to stay-on whatever spot i'd tell her to and left for several hours, you could bet that when I got back-that Friskey would still be in the exact same spot.
Best regards-Carl.

Re: Bad Night Last Night
I am glad your dog is ok. I had a dog bitten by a copperhead in the 1980's and her leg really got swollen. The Vet bill back then was only $55.
I sat by a copperhead for about two hours one night and only noticed it when it moved. They blend in really well with pine needles.
Killing them with a shot gun it alot more "therapeutic" than using a garden hoe.

He eating.
I scrambled an egg and poured milk in to cool it down for him. He ate every bite.

Appetite is a good sign. About two years ago, my Cat, Shasta, was bitten by some Bug-which slowly made her sick and to not want to eat. I only noticed because she was drooling badly. I took her to the Vets-she got a shot of something, and was feeling much better by the time we got back home. That night, she got treated to some Turkey and some gravy. I wish that I had had a picture of her face-you could see how please she was. Her nose was wet, no drooling, and was in very good appetite.

Re: Bad Night Last Night
One good point with Norway. We only have one venomous snake, but it is not lethal. Best of luck with the dog Slip.

I'll take the rattlesnake over the politicians. At least you can legally kill the snakes.
Rattlesnakes aren't as bad, at least they usually warn you before striking and will leave if you let them. Copperheads don't and moccasins tend to come after you.
