Re: Please tell me I'm dreaming?
Oh come off it, the Mail has once again taken a molehill and made a mountain out of it. All that has happenned is that a few shop owners have said that they won't display the image in their shop because according to their religion dogs are unclean. Seems reasonable to me, you wouldn't expect a Jewish shop-keeper to be happy advertising phone numbers on rashers of bacon would you? A local Islamic community leader simply pointed this out to the police and said that there was no point sending the card to Muslims because they wouldn't display them. The police said 'oops, didn't think of that, sorry' and that is that.
There is no 'outrage' just a refusal by Muslims to display an image they find offensive on their own premisis. There is no demand to get get rid of the card, simply someone pointing out that there isn't much point sending it to Muslims. There is no problem here, other than another hate mongering side of swill from the Mail.
Come on, this has to be the most rediculous example of a paper desperatly attempting to portray Muslims as evil, no one has done ANYTHING wrong here.
ED: I particularly like the line 'has sparked such anger that shopkeepers have refused to display the picture.' Thats not anger, that not putting up a picture you dislike, what's wrong with that?

I wonder how many of the same shops have no qualms about selling men-only magazines? I've yet to walk into a Muslim-owned shop that didn't stock them.
No-one's "desperately attempting to portray Muslims" as anything. It's called reporting news.

Re: Please tell me I'm dreaming?
Here in the US we have similar encounters with the media. Sometimes the headlines have nothing in common with the story but written to get readers. I remember a while back in the British show 'Spitting Image' the media was represented by pigs. Good choice.

Oh come on Gordon, it's hardly 'news.' Does that mean the next article we see will be about Kosher butchers not selling bacon? Shock horror, people don't display things they find offensive!
Seriously, can you see anything unreasonable about what is going on. Someone says 'I don't want to display this in my shop' and a local councillor points out to the police that there isn't much point asking Muslims to put these pictures up because they won't. Police say 'oops, good point, thanks for letting us know.' End of story. The Mail is trying to make this look like some big deal, that Islamists are up in arms because of a cute little puppy which everyone loves, those damned unreasonable Muslims are outraged again, shock horror! That simply isn't the case. People just don't want to put up something they dont like in their shops. That is the kind of freedom we take for granted and yet when a Muslim shop keeper exercises it he is said to be 'outraged.'
Honestly mate, I can't believe you take this pathetic rag seriously.

Re: Please tell me I'm dreaming?
Stefan,
I can't believe you're so obsessed with one newspaper. Muslims don't like pictures of dogs? So presumably they do like the porno magazines most of their shops are quite happy to sell? Or alcohol, Bacon, Pork etc etc?
The paper reported news; get over it.

Re: Please tell me I'm dreaming?
Hardly obsessed, just annoyed that people regard this as news. Frankly though I do feel this kind of hate mongering is dangerous, irresponsible and stupid. Remember, for every intelligent chap like you reading this and saying 'please tell me I'm dreaming' there are several more morons foaming at the mouth about how rediculous this is and they should all **** off back to wherever because they are all terrorists and this is the thin end of the wedge.
As much as anything, the headline and first couple of lines of the article are quite clearly lies. No outrage, no anger, just people exercising their right to choose what pictures they put up. Incidentally, I should imagine that the people who haven't put these pictures up are the same shop owners who do not sell booze, porn, pork and so on. Sure loads of Muslim shop owners do sell these things, much as there are members of other religions who aren't particularly strict and so aren't as stringent in the way they follow their religion as others. You are just making rediculous generalisations about people now.
Or I might be wrong, in which case how dare people pick and choose which part of their religion they follow and which they ignore. In fact I'm surprised many of us have time to post in between loving our neighbours, slaughtering oxen and the like.

Based on personal observations/experience, and therefore hardly ridiculous.
Anyway, could someone delete this thread?

Re: Please tell me I'm dreaming?
I disagree, but yeah, delete away. (I think you can do it yourself now by editing your original post and ticking the delete button).
