As it's one of my favourite subjects I've seen dozens of War films (much to my Girlfriends delight!) but I've probably missed quite a few too.
So I was wondering what everyone's top three films were - see if I can catch some of the ones I've missed :thumb:

    I'll start it off.....

Laurence of Arabia - Truly an epic film, a bit long winded but I've still seen it about 10 times. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Saving Private Ryan - the opening scene on the beach just blows me away every time, especially when I first saw it in the cinema. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Conspiracy - Set in the Wansee Conference, this is the meeting where the Nazi high command decided on the Final Solution. A chilling film, but totally gripping - the way they decide the fate of millions of people as if they were just cattle. Conspiracy (2001) (TV)

    Now over to everyone else.....

'Haven't seen "Conspiracy" , will check it out. Branagh as the evil Reinhard Heydrich looks irresistable...

    For me:

    Das Boot

    Downfall (Der Untergang)

    Cross of Iron

Ditto Dave:thumb:Those three are up there in my opinion too, as well as

    The Longest Day

All Quiet On The Western Front

    The Battle Of Britain

    And of course....Kellys Heroes;):thumb:

Three out of so many makes the choice very difficult..

Longest Day: truly a classic and for its time i have to put it at #1

Saving Private Ryan: just the middle section lets this film down otherwise it would have been some film to beat.

I am going with the "Dam Busters" for my third choice again for its time it was a classic.

Downfall - that's one film I keep meaning to see - looks like a goody. Found a great spoof on this for Football Fans too - Hitler loosing the plot over Sheffield United being relegated. Very funny...

Depends really. I'd have to put mine in to eras I think.

    50's - The Longest Day
    The Dam Busters
    The Cruel Sea
    Ice Cold in Alex

    60's - Battle of Britain
    633 Squadron
    Where Eagles Dare

    70's - Patton

    80's - Das Boot
    Memphis Belle

    90's - Saving Private Ryan

2000's - The Thin Red Line
    Downfall
    Enemy at the Gates
Flags of our Fathers (Although I haven't seen this yet)

Don't waste your time mate it's shocking ! That said I will probably throw good money after bad and get hold of "Letters From Iwo Jima", anyone seen that yet ?
Of the recent ones, "Saints And Soldiers" [2003] I think is superb.

I heard that Flag of Our Fathers wasn't as much of a war movie, as a politcal movie.

My favorite war movies would have to be:

    We Were Soldiers
    Saving Private Ryan

I'm not much of a "movie crier" but both of those made me cry uncontrollably. In We Were Soldiers, when they had those cab drivers delivering the telegrams it just made me so mad. Anyone know if there is any truth to that?

Of all the recent films made it has to be Downfall for me. Watched it at the cinema with my late dad in a small screen with the decent sound system turned on. It felt like you were actually in the Bunker with them. Really eerie feeling ...

I loved Saving Private Ryan. That movie really pulled on my heart. The commitment and determination those men had and the love they shared for each other was so moving. Not to mention Tom Hanks is my all time favorite actor.

    War Movies

I have not watched a lot but would love to know some of your favorites. Maybe we can have a movie club we watch a movie a week and then discuss it. Wouldn't that be fun?

wow, I never thought about how many war films there actually are, or even how many I've seen for that matter.
I think out of the ones listed by the thread starter, I would pick Lawrence of arabia, it's the first film that grabbed me, strange as it isnt particularly fast paced ,but a great film.
My favourite ww2 film though is schindlers list, but my favourite war film of all time someone else in tis thread mentioned too, and its We Were Soldiers. Thats a great war film, well done mel gibson!

I don't think it's the best as far as special effects or accuracy but my favorite war film was The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse featuring Rudolph Valentino (yes, a silent)...the imagery was very touching, it really grasped the emotion people of the time were feeling. A bit creepy, too.

    Here's a summary:
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And a video clip of his famous tango scene:
