Me, I like dogs and figure dogs are great at work. But I guess many folks don't like them. What do you think? Here is an article from the local rag. Seems that some immigrants are not too fond of dogs. I guess there is also a liability issue for the employer. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/britis...uver-1.4551617 KTK
I feel like dogs in a work setting might be difficult, but I too am fond of Dogs. We Americans, and mostly other European nations are really the only dog loving peoples in the world. Some in South America, a handful in Africa, and barely any in Asia. Heck, they eat dogs in South Korea.
The British army used to tolerate officer's dogs. Many HQ buildings around Salisbury plain have resembled a kennels at times. There is/ a class and rank distinction applying to both dog and owner. A Labrador, retriever or lets face it any gun dog is an acceptable accessory for an officer. A mastiff, or pit bull does nothing to enhance status and ownership in the lines might be interpreted as irresponsibility among other ranks. (That has not stopped some soldiers from taking pet ownership to extremes The Herford Lion thief and other BAOR stories- any corroboration welcome) I served a commanding officer who owned a Jack Russell. OK This is a borderline breed as terriers are technically working dogs. However, this animal had a pathological hatred of the RSM's highly polished boots to much hilarity and a certain diminution of the dignity of both CO and RSM. The other disadvantage of small irritating yappy dogs is that they can be made to fit into the breech of an 8" howitzer - so I have been told Which brings me to the big risk associated with taking dogs to work. An obedient gun dog reflects the charisma, and commanding personality of the commanding officer or company OC. A disobedient mutt that sh1ts all over the place and eats the furniture raises questions about the leadership qualities of its owner. Ditto the levels of obedience shown by their wives and children... (Sorry, but it has to be said - even in these PC times. Returns to his pink gin in the anti room lined with Snaffles prints and where his snores compete with the the dull rumble of the ranges ....
I'd love dogs anywhere, except maybe in an OR. That's probably unfair to dog-loving surgeons. Sorry... .
Well, when I was a teacher at both LSU and Auburn I often took my Black Lab "Roland" to the studio as did some students. . two retired Grayhounds were regulars. Of course, that is an unusual situation but much fun.. Since then almost all Universities ban them, scared of law suits ! Many years ago I took an Air Italia flight from Milan to Brussels and they let dogs walk on board. A German Sheppard sleep in the aisle and two smaller dogs on seats.. Have noticed so called "comfort:" dogs onboard, too much for me ! I think that a people problem. In much of Europe I see dogs and cats in stores and more than fine with me.
Generally speaking....I like dogs, but I don't like dog owners, and I especially don't like dog shit. In my locality, dog owners are happy to let their dogs shit anywhere, and rarely scoop the poop, preferring to bag it and chuck it in a hedge. Or leave it in a pile on the path. No dogs except working dogs wold be my policy if I ruled the world. That, or draconian measures for irresponsible (90%) dog owners. There, rant over! (wink) Kind Regards, David.
My last job before retiring was at a golf course and with so many home owners living on the course as members dogs on the property was a constant including my own. As a general rule they were well liked by all except the serious gamblers and the occasional person of foreign extraction. Then again sometimes the dog could be the issue. On our number 1 hole a mid sized dog was very territorial and charged anyone near its back yard, but would back down when challenged. Another off number 3 green would dart out and snag a ball that landed on the green every so often. Then again one who lived off number 9 green (named Bogie of course) would amble over to pro shop at first lite and spend all day on the course. He had his favorites (those that brought him treats/leftovers) and would hop on the cart to ride with them until they hit a creek or lake only to hop on with somebody else later on till he eventually found his way back to the pro shop. When he passed nearly a dozen people wanted to be there when his ashes were scattered at his favorite haunts.
My neighbor takes his dog to work every day. Dog rides in the back of the SUV and comes out when the officer needs his partner. Great pooch!
How about this? Go to work and........work!! and play with your dog or whatever on your own time. As W.C. Fields put it: "Any man who hates dogs and children can't be all bad!"
