Unknown shell (?) in norway

Hello!

I need a bit of help with a weird shell that was found in norway recently.



It looks like a mortar shell, but neither the british nor the german mortar shells looked like that, especially with the weird fin shapes. I even looked up norwegian mortars to see if its maybe a norwegian shell but it doesnt seem so.

Yes of course, a school class found it and they reported it to the police immediately. I did not make the picture, I was just wondering what exactly it is.

Looks similar to a lot of mortar rounds I saw pictured but the fins look a bit different than any I saw.

 

Yes the fins are smaller than the body but with flanges on the ends of them that I didn't see anywhere else. Could be they are damage or something else though. Far from my area of expertise.

 

Didnt they hand drop similar bombs from aircraft in WW1?

 

Exactly. That puts it much clearer than I did. And it doesn't look like damage could have caused it. Some mortar rounds did have a circle of metal connecting the outsides of the fins but it looks like consistent shaping of the fins so unless the circle was designed with breakaway sections that doesn't seem likely to me. Other than that the shape looks consistent with quite a few mortar rounds as does the size.

Why would an American shell be found in Norway?

.

 

We used to have maneuvers there on a fairly regular basis in conjunction with Norwegian forces. One of the guys that used to be in our office got frost bite there on one such.

Norway also had Leopard 1's at one point which could have used those rounds. Not sure if their M-48's ever had the 105s if they did they could be a possibility as well.
