SSGT William Smith, 41st Division, Japanese Souvenir

These items belonged to SSGT William Smith of the 41st Division. Part of the grouping included an officers Samurai Sword that he had hanging over his fireplace for his entire life. The sword is in great shape and the collection also includes his coat, pants, garrison cap and a few other Japanese items.

 

I was lucky enough to purchase it from one of my contacts I have made over the years. I am always surprised how families do not want to keep items that are connected to them and the history that it tells.

 

Not many uniforms with seven overseas Service bars-that's three and a half years overseas during wartime. The American Campaign medal is placed correctly but the Asiatic-Pacific should be in the middle, then the Philippine Liberation Meal last since it's a foreign award. The hole in the Asiatic Pacific was for an arrowhead device. The 41st was credited with two armed assaults. Odd that it didn't include a Good Conduct ribbon and a philippine Defense ribbon. Really an impressive collection.
You're so right about families not finding these items valuable. I have two of my brother's uniforms and war trophies that have been part of our family since the war, now I'm finding it difficult to determine who to pass it all down to that would have any interest. Really sad how these men's sacrifices will be forgotten by the family.

 

Thank you for the correction on the ribbons. I always want to make sure that the items are displayed correctly and also with respect. Even though the families may have forgotten I make it my mission to make sure that men like my father and SSGT Smith are always remembered
