Yes, that's the book. The combat narrative is pretty general but it gives dates and places that can be researched further. I'll scan the page and see if it will post- apologize for being so darn computer illiterate

Jim, I got the page scanned and tried to upload it but it is too large. I'll break it into smaller pieces and try. On April 5th, 45 "It ( the 2nd Infantry Div) went into the attack to take the Weser River heights north of Hann Muenden. The 23rd Inf made the Weser River crossing at Veckerhagen, the division followed on the tanks of the 9th Armored Division and making fast progress." Quoted from World War II Order of Battle, by Shelby L. Stanton.

no that's one of the things i'm trying to find out, he remembers being in a town exchanging gun fire, walking behind a tank, and the tank exploding he is not sure if it ran over a mine or anti tank fire, but he can't remember the name of the town/city.

VA Records Management Center - Locations

Jim, above is the link to the VA Record Management Center in St. Louis, MO. Since your father was wounded and sent to the hospital all his medical records should be held at this facility. The National Personal Record Center was holding the medical records with the veterans personnel file but have transferred these archived records to this facility. They will also have any record that has to do with the VA--GI Bill info, disability pay, etc.
I strongly suggest writing and asking for all his records that they have. Since he is still living, he can obtain everything they have, so have him sign the request. The next of kin can also get these records but they can hold some back, where they shouldn't for your dad. I read through your thread and didn't see where you requested the NARA for his personnel records or a replacement set of his medals and other awards. His records just may have been destroyed in the '72 fire, regardless. they will still use other sources to determine his awards and send them. (sounds like he was Infantry and probably earned the Combat Infantry Badge. He might not realize that the CIB also entitles him to the Bronze Star Medal.) All this is free for your father and for his Next of Kin. It does take time but it's worth the wait.

Read through this thread, It might give you an idea what I went through to get my brother's records.

It's possible that larger files can be uploaded to the "media" section of this board. I haven't used it yet so can't be sure.

Thanks for the like lwd, and I'll try the media thing--I decided mixing a new computer and an old man can produce startling results.

thanks, my mother does have his discharge papers, and what i'm guessing is probably his disability application paper, i'll have to see what records she does have.fortunately there is a gulf war veteran that lives in his town and actually got him his medals a year or two ago. i'll have to check on the bronze star though and make sure he got it. thanks again for the info i'll check into it.

excellent, that's pretty detailed on dates and places where my father probably was, and where he was when wounded on april 5th. (i'm assuming when they are talking about the 23rd all the companies would be there)thanks for taking the time to help, i'll have to write the names of the towns on paper and show him maybe that will jar his memory if he see's it. also i've seen some maps of Germany in 45, but the ones i've seen are blurry and hard to read the names, do you know any sites that have good clear maps that I could read.

    Yeah, that's the one.

As for scanning docs, if you take a careful picture it's just as good. I use articulated cameras for docs that I won't run through a scanner.

The Company Morning Reports will tell you the date he was wounded and the location of the Company. The location usually includes map coordinates for the Company's location which is nice because it's a bit more specific. The MRs may or may not have an account of what the Company was doing on a given day. That seems to vary depending on the person who wrote them up. Even if they don't have much in the way of narrative, they essentially give you an outline of his service. That allows you to place him in the context of the unit's history narrative.

I'm pretty sure that is a reference to the high ground overlooking the Weser River valley. Hann Münden is located at the juncture of the Weser and Fulda Rivers. Veckerhagen is located upstream (North) of Hann Münden. If you are using Google Maps, you may have to zoom in on Reinhardshagen until the name Veckerhagen shows up.

ok thanks everyone, I did send a email to a researcher to see what the cost would be for a detailed report on k company. But I will keep searching and asking questions here if you all don't mind, like you guy's told me though it's hard to find info on specific companies it's more generalized to the 23rd infantry.
