Good morning from New York. I'm new to the forum so thanks for having me. I'm currently assisting a group in Germany who recently found a dog tag in the ground at a construction site. The goal is to identify the family of that person so I can return the dog tag. Most of my previous WW research, which is extensive, has been from Europe as my grandfather served with the RAF, so this is actually new to me. Is there a way to determine information about the branch of military or anything more specific by the number? If anyone is interested in digging, the identifiers are "Peter A Magliocco" with an ID No. of "RA 18856627." I have found similar names but any input on how to further identify is more than appreciated.
Is this a United States dog tag? I ask due to the serial number containing (I think) at least one too many numbers. Never mind there were 8 digit numbers. Just checked Fold3 and found two Peter Magliocco's. No middle initial. One from New York state and one from Pennsylvania.There are also several other Peter Magliocco's with different middle names. I'll keep digging.
Thank you! Although I think I just found a reference to this being a Vietnam era dog tag? If that's the case it looks more like someone stationed there who lost it. Although he could have still been a war casualty obviously. DOG TAG REFERENCE Also, I spoke with the daughter of a Pietro, aka Peter Magliocco of Bighamton, NY who does not think this is her father because he didn't have a middle initial.
