More than half the US are "essential workers" going about their lives. Half the states never really locked down, people outside enjoying recreational opportunities, working and so on. The virus (according to the CDC) is dead in 90 seconds in sunlight, but lingers 18 hours on surfaces indoors, so everybody must stay indoors except that half of the family that is working and carrying the virus home, where it lingers... In some states you can't pick up a quart of milk at the local Mom n' Pop store, but are forced to use the big box store with thousands of other people.

The "lockdown" is largely nonsensical. Even if it weren't so arbitrary and stupid, it isn't meant to save lives, but to spread out the deaths. Many people can't grasp that simple fact.

In the end, the virus is not going away. You can't live in your bunker forever.

You do know that the virus that entered NY arrived from Europe, right?

Yes, and we banned travel from Europe a few days later, and that decision was also attacked by the media and the left.

As a matter of fact trump didn't issue a travel ban from China either. He issued a travel restriction.

The Facts on Trump's Travel Restrictions

But that's all water over the dam. The CIC let the enemy infiltrate our perimeter. After action reports are best written after the battle is won.

    Tegnell?

The same Tegnell that said the high Swedish death toll came as a surprise.

The same Tegnell that said the outsized toll was not part of the plan.

The same Tegnell that said officials thought it would be easier keeping COVID out of nursing homes(50% of Sweden's deaths).

    That Tegnell.

No, I am buying my definition of shut down.

When my last employer shut down, I did not get to keep working 40,000 more hours. I was let go.

If I shut off a water faucet. 40,000 gallons of water does not keep coming out of the faucet.

If you do not pay your electric bill and your power is shut off, you do not get 40,000 more kilowatt hours.

What red-blooded 'murican would travel to a communist country? None!
Only Commie sympathizers would travel to a Communist country. Those darn Commie Symps like China so much let then stay there.

    ALL HAIL THE COMPUTER!
    Points for the reference.

What country did MERS start in? The "Middle East" is not a country.

Ebola started in 2 different places simultaneously, the village on the Ebola River was only one.

IIRC, the "Spanish flu" did not start in Spain.

    Link to CDC literature please.

I see you are one who cannot grasp the simple fact that it saves lives. What if every where had been like NYC, with nowhere to go with admitted patients, and nowhere to go with new patients.
What then, how many more lives lost?

As everybody else Dr. Anders Tegnell isn't infallible. Mistakes are inevitable in fight against a novel (novel = unknown) virus.
But he and his people are trusted and loved in Sweden, only 11 percent have doubts about his leadership.

He didn't succumb to fear and irrationality as the majority of world leaders.
He plays the long game. He says the virus isn't going away, there will be no vaccine in foreseeable future, everybody will eventually meet the virus face to face - lockdowns will not avert that.
The Swedish health care system hasn't been overwhelmed by the virus and functions normally. The Swedes live normal life. As to "casualties" Sweden is in the middle of all European countries.
The Swedes live and die on their feet. We, like rats, on all fours.

We know everything about Sars-CoV-2 and nothing about it.
We can read every one of the (on average) 29,903 letters in its genome and know exactly how its 15 genes are transcribed into instructions to make which proteins. But we cannot figure out how it is spreading in enough detail to tell which parts of the lockdown of society are necessary and which are futile. Several months into the crisis we are still groping through a fog of ignorance and making mistakes. There is no such thing as ‘the science’.

This is not surprising or shameful; ignorance is the natural state of things. Every new disease is different and its epidemiology becomes clear only gradually and in retrospect. Is Covid-19 transmitted mainly by breath or by touching? Do children pass it on without getting sick? Why is it so much worse in Britain than Japan? Why are obese people especially at risk? How many people have had it? Are ventilators useless after all? Why is it not exploding in India and Africa? Will there be a second wave? We do not begin to have answers to these questions.

As a result, we don’t really know what works. It is possible that washing your hands, not shaking hands with others, not gathering in large crowds, and wearing a face mask in public, but no more than this, might have been enough, as Sweden seems to suggest.
Forcibly shutting schools and shops and aggressively policing sunbathers in parks may have added little in terms of reducing the rate of spread.

If ignorance is the natural state of things wouldn’t taking all precautions be prudent?...shouldn’t a responsible government hope for the best but plan for the worst?

Of course, planning for the worst is a good thing.

This is what the Swedes are doing, they plan for the worst, and the worst is a vaccine will never be found.

    More victims:
Amid Pandemic, Hospitals Lay Off 1.4M Workers In April
The American Hospital Association has predicted that U.S. health systems will lose $200 billion through June. Most of that loss revenue is because hospitals are no longer performing elective procedures. And because hospitals aren't making very much money, they can't afford to keep everyone on staff.

Victims of COVID or victims of a broken health care system that has based it's economic viability entirely around elective surgeries?
