Cool

I have a friend whose grandfather was a tanker with the 7th U.S. Armored Division in the ETO. The problem is he and I can't find a definitive account or unit history about this American Division that played a major part in so many major battles following the invasion of 44. Any help would be appreciated.

You probably already tried this but this is the 'unofficial' home page for the 7th. It references books written by vets as well as those written about the 7th. Hope it helps

Hello knight,

I am also looking for a similar book. The 7th played a big but unsuccesful part in the battle of Overloon, as Sapper wrote on another topic. I myself recently went to the museum there.

Do you think your friend's father has maybe something to tell about that? In other words; do you think he is open to being quizzed about that battle?

Stevin

I am sorry but he has passed away. His grandson is looking for any information that would shed light on his actions as a tanker. Thanks for the help.

7th AD was new in August 1944. On Aug 14th it was in the Argantan area, having recently landed on Omaha beach the previous week.

Elements of 7AD, probably recon units, drove 60 miles to Chartres by the 15th.

August 24th, engaged crossing the Seine at Melun and suffered heavy casualties. Finally captured Melun on Aug 27th.

August 28th 7th AD beaten to Chateau-Thierry by elements of 3rd AD.

I suppose that once they managed to cross the Marne and the Meuse, they were held up by the Siegried line with the rest of Patton's army.

Not an illustrious war record.
