After autumn ( Liberation of Orel?) 1943 Russia started shooting cannon shots for the honour of big cities´liberation. I think it was 6 shots.

I wonder if anyone can say why they started this tradition or was it used before? When was the last time they shot these honour shots? And was Orel the first time?

Just for example I just found these:

On the destruction of German troops in the Korsun pocket, the " New Stalingrad", 224 shots were fired in Kreml.

On 25th March 1944 General Trofimenko crossed the border at river Prut and 324 shots were fired to honour this situation.

On liberation of Poznan 23.2.1945 20 salvoes from 224 guns were fired.
