would every RAF squadron/unit have taken a group photograph for records etc ? and if so where or how could i start looking for them?

That's a very good question, Steven, and I have no idea of the answer !

Firstly, judging from the number of such photos I've seen in books, I'd think that every Squadron had one ( or more ) taken.

Have you tried asking the RAF Museum at Hendon ?
