Was recently on holiday in Northumberland and noticed a memorial to the 4th and 8th Btns NF in the grounds of Hexham Abbey. Also on the memorial was the Recce Corps badge, so I assume one of these two Btns was converted to a recce role. Anyone know which one and where both of them served?

Martin Bull has disabled reputation
It was the 8th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers which converted to Reconnaissance. Haven't yet found out where they served.....

Default Re: 4th and 8th Battalions Northumberland Fusiliers

The 4th & 8th were motor Cycle Recce Battalions during the Dunkirk Phase.
The 4th became the first 'Recce battalion' in Sep 1940 based on the scout car as the primary fighting and recce vehicle. There would be one for each Division 4th been with the 50th Div.
The 8th battalion joined 3rd Div in Nov 1940 and were destined to become the Recce battalion. In spring 1941 the Batt became 3rd recce Regiment (RNF) and adopted cavalry terms, such as squadron, troop etc. Attempts were made to prevent the wearing of RNF cap badge this was resisted for over a year, but the unit wore its RNF shoulder titles till disbandment after the war. This battalion went into action in NW Europe in 1944.
My Great uncles Battalion the 4th became the 50th Battalion the Recce Corps (4RNF) and was shipped out to the middle east in June 1941 as part of 50th DIV.
In Feb 1942 it left 50th DIV and became part of support group for 22nd Armoured Brigade 1st Armoured Division. Its role was changed to that of Motor Battalion 3 coys and one Anti Tank coy.
By 1730hrs on the 6th of june 1942 this Battalion had ceased to exist after a desperate battle at Knightsbridge Libiya.
If anyone has been or plans to go to the Knightsbridge battle area let me know my Great Uncle is buried at Acroma.

Regards Nick
