gents looking for the possible Mossie downing of an RAF Intruder ? on the night of August 2/3, 1943 by my cousin Hans Baer in 4./NJG 3. The shoot down briefly states south of Westerland which could be just about anywhere along the route.
I have nothing on 605 squadron so any help is a plus.....intruder ops going on this night or was this a Mossie bomber ? crewmen names and code of a/c if available ?
many thanks
Erich

25 Mossies and six Beaufighters attacked airfields this night, between 22.57 and 01.27, Erich, so it would be Intruder ops.
605 Sqn lost one Mossie on this date:
F/O ALBERT VICTOR AYLOTT (pilot)and
F/O PERCIVAL JAMES SAMUEL EVANS (Nav.)
They crashed into the sea and were never recovered. They are mentioned on the Runnymede memorial. Sounds feasable when shot down south of Westerland....
One other mossie, of 157 Sqn was also lost. No details available so far.

It was more likely to have been a FBVI ; 605 only had a very small number of MkIIs. If Stevin can find the serial number....?

Martin I checked Mossie.org web-site on the 605th and it mentions the conversion of Bostons to Mk II's in February of 43.
yes ?

That's correct, but they only took 6 MkII's on strength before converting to the FBVI in June 1943.
They then took a total of 33 FBVI's.....

It's very frustrating about the Mosquito - bomber losses can easily be checked with plenty of references available, but not so fighter losses....

well just received a mail from friend with a huge Mossie data base. It appears that Hptm Baer and his two other crew members were piloting a Do 217N-1, werke nummer 001493 and near Westerland on their way back to base-landed ? were strafed by a British intruder Mossie from the 418 squadron.
418 Calim: Bla/4km south of Rantum, south of Westerland. He is looking for the 418 a/c and crew at this time
the Do 217N-1 was 80% destroyed......more puzzle pieces now

No, no serial, I am afraid. Ian Piper's booklet does list all serials, but not if/when they were downed. Maybe in "We Never Slept" by the same author, which I don't own yet...
Martin I do believe that a Fighter Command Losses volume was published not too long ago, but they will not list the NF mossies, I gather.

So far, the only published list of Mosquito air-to-air victories appears in the seminal work 'Mosquito' by Sharp & Bowyer from 1967 ( ! ) and this only applies to Defence of Great Britain claims. This was copied word-for-word in Martin Bowman's recent Crowood Mosquito book.
There's certainly a big gap in the market !

Maybe a study into to Mossie NF would be a nice project for my end paper in 3 years....Recently a few vets suggested I should take the Jan. 11, 1944 research (which is very slow at the moment) to include the other missions leading up to and including Big Week(Operation Pointblank)....I might as well start research right now, if I want to be ready by May, 2008....
Still, you can't be persuaded to take up this task, Martin? It will most certainly lead to a dedicated following of enthousiasts...

It would indeed be a worthwhile project, Stevin - but I don't even get time to do what I do now....
Perhaps a donation from forum members to cover my living expenses while I'm engaged on research ? About £1,000,000 should do nicely....

Wow, that will enable you to maintain quite a living style, Martin! Secretly trying to finance your own Mossie like this???
But I know what you mean. Time is a commodity. I myself lack the time to seriously continue the research into 11 Jan. which is a real shame, so I am kind of hoping to turn this or a similar project into a endpaper for my MA degree. Must say that the NF mossies operations do interest me quite a bit.
