In his study, Charles Whiting, does not provide a tabulated list, but mentions various casualty situations in the text. During the 6 month episode he sites involvement of 8 Infantry Divisions, 2 Armoured Divisions, several smaller units and men constantly being seconded from units which ordinarily should not have seen them taking part in front line infantry service.

His gives a total figure for dead and wounded of almost 30'000, not including those invalided through battle fatigue, (nervous breakdown).

Approximately every 2 weeks a Division was fed into the 50 square mile area. Most rifle companies experienced up to 50% casualties while the 60th Regiment (9th Division) and the 22nd Regiment (4th Division) were wiped out.

Default Re: Hurtgen

I have heard, killed outright, 8000-12000.
You have to understand that in my research of the Hurtgen, it is a constant note that many men disappeared into thick fog never to be seen again, and thus count towards figures compiled at wars end. Also, some of the German artillery was quite effective, and reduced many men to unrecognisable puddles, so again this may effect the true figure.

A terrible fight, and a true shame that it rates up there with Burma as such a forgotten sideshow
