Cool

Just finished Susan Travers´ book "Tomorrow to be brave" and she mentions that not protecting yourself from the sun properly could mean that you were convicted as if you had harmed yourself trying to get away from battle.

Was anyone really convicted for getting sunburnt?

Many Armies treated it as a "Self Inflicted Wound", I know it was a threat in my time. I dont know if it was legal law or jungle law

A very interesting question Kai. I've been reading military history my whole life and never even dreamed of Sunburn as an issue. Not a lot of information on the web about Sunburn in the military either. Anyone who was in the military have something to add?

My old man recounts how he was told sunburn would be punished as a self-inflicted wound before landing in Tunisia. Then again, I've seen wartime footage of Desert Rats being told to take their shirts off and lie in the midday sun for 15 minutes, front and back, to "acclimatise" them. Seems a bit ambiguous.
