On May 29, 1941, she was spotted and attacked by some German Junkers Ju 87 Stuka dive bombers.
The HMS Imperial was so heavily damaged by the precise bombing, that she had to be scuttled North to Crete.

On Beevor´s Crete book it is claimed that HMS Hotspur sank the HMS Imperial because it was so heavily damaged. In the book it is also mentioned that there were soldiers on the HMS Imperial so drunk they could not be moved to the other ship. So the men drowned with the ship...
Is this true? Anyone seen this elsewhere being mentioned as well? How many were left to drown?
