Hey,

Despite being an 'old timer' i havent posted all that much over the years i've been here. I do stop by most days and read the current threads, and occasionally throw in my 2cents worth.

Anyways, i recently got to visit the SO's Grand Parents in this pretty cool little community they live in. Several Vets live there (one we ran into was in a Submarine all of WWII operating out of Australia) but the SO's G-Dad was with the 75th Infantry, 299th Artillery (i wrote it down on a piece of paper i can no longer find). He operated a 105MM Light Artillery Piece and was involved in the war from the Battle of the Bulge onwards.

I was wondering what other information i could get about the 75th, not knowing very much beyond the 45 mins he took to show me his photo album from the war.

Thanks.

These links should be of interest to you:

By the way, that second link says there was no 299th Artillery in the 75th Division but there was a 899th .

Thanks for the quick reply!

Like i said, i wrote it down but lost the paper, but knew it was x99th...299th stuck in my mind for some reason. But yeah, the 899th definately makes sense as it was 105mm Battery.

He doesnt like talking about it (the war) and what he told me was the most he has ever told anyone (according to the SO).

He almost put a Bazooka round into a US Tank, since he was in a trench and could hear the tank creeping up. He was glad to see the White Star on the side of it marking it as friendly.

And he is also pretty sure he might have let some of those Germans acting as US MPs across the frontline too. He told me he was on duty with a few others at night and challenged a group of GI's in the middle of then night. In retrospect, he realised that only one of them answered and that the following day he heard the story about Germans dressed as MPs that had gotten behidn the lines somehow. Oops...
