Can anyone tell me, is there some way of discovering where the “Hampshire Regiment”, 2nd Battalion, was on or just before 6th February 1944? I know they were in Italy at that time and pretty certain they were involved in the First Battle for Monte Cassino but, my question is, were they in any special action on or around the date of 6th February? I have a record of a friend of my grandfather who died of his wounds, while in that regiment, and on that day and I would like to know more, if possible.

I’ve searched the Internet several times but not been able to find anything that answers my question. I’d be grateful for any help.

Regards,

John

Hi John,
As I don't have the Hampshire's regimental history and can't find their war-diaries anymore (I'm sure they're online somewhere) could I suggest you try the Regimental museum at:
http://www.royalhampshireregimentmuseum.co.uk/
I remember being told that the curator is an Italy Veteran.
I assume you've been through this site:
http://www.pauljerrard.com/
I'm sure a polite email to the owner with the man's name would get a response, though it might also be worth waiting as more ww2 info seems to be in the pipeline there.
Cheers,
Adam.

Gday John

2nd Bn, the Hapshire Rgt was in 128 Bde, 46 Infantry Division

Between 9/9/43 & 31/10 the Bn suffered 365 casualties.

About 22 Jan 44 128 Bde came under command of 5 Div for an assualt on Castleforte & Sujo, by 29 Jan it was agian with 46 Div.

Every effort being made to relieve pressure on the Anzio beachead so the attack on the Garigliano front continued.

2 Special Service Bde served on the front and the Division made continued attempts to extend the bridgehead and capture Monte Maio. Until 29 march X Corps held the bridgehad over the Garigliano until relieved by II US Corps & the CEF.

Thanks Adam, unfortunately Paul Jerrards site doesn't cover the years I'm looking for. But I have thought that I might just send him an email to see if he can help. Thanks very much for your input.

Gday Ali, I'll need time to digest what you;ve given me (I'm not that quick!!)but it looks good!
Thanks for your help, too!

Regards to both,

John
