Found something and you are correct, it is German. Looks to be a H-M164 West German Combat Helmet without Camouflage cover. You can look at it at this link about halfway down:

They were wearing them after the War when the Bundeswehr was created in the 50s.

A good book to get is one entitled "Uniforms of the German Soldier,An Illustrated History from World War II to the Present Day" by Alejandro M. De Quesada. Quite a few pictures from post WWII to Today. Lots of early Bundeswehr pics from the 50s,60s and 70s.
