Tobruk after El Alamein
I was wondering if anyone know if Hitler had any demands on turning Tobruk into a fortress for the Germans after El Alamein just like it was for the British in 1941?? I somehow have missed it if Hitler had any such wishes/orders....

Tobruk taken by the Allies 10 days after the battle of El Alamein. There was no call by Hitler to turn Tobruk into a strongpoint, and even if he had, the Africa korps was in no fit state to do so.

Re: Tobruk after El Alamein
Thanx Redcoat for your answer!
That is probably the answer and Hitler also had other big problems elsewhere so he did not have time to think about Rommel and DAK. However when Rommel thought it was time to retreat from Alamein Hitler ordered them to hold on and win or die. So that´s why I was wondering if Hitler had any thoughts on Tobruk.

There has been some historical revision over Hitlers so-called 'no retreat' order. Some historians are taking the view that Kesselring took when he read it, that it wasn't an order as such, but a poorly worded morale boosting message.
Hitlers reaction when he heard that Rommel had ordered a full retreat does tend to back up that view, as he took the news with sadness but didn't get angry.

Re: Tobruk after El Alamein
As I understand this was the point that Rommel , at least in several books, is totally shocked but prepares the defensive lines again. Wouldn´t this historical revision mean that Rommel misunderstood it as well? This is also called the point when Rommel´s faith in Hitler was shattered in several books.
Do you have any info what was Kesselring´s view to Rommel about all this. Did Kesselring keep his thoughts to himself?

It was Kesselring who told Rommel, when Rommel showed him the telegram ,that he didn't think the message was an order as such, and to start the withdrawal, and that he as area commander would inform Hitler that circumstances forced the retreat in order to save at least some of the Africa Korps.
When Kesselring informed Hitler what was happening, Hitler accepted the situation and sent off a message to Rommel supporting his actions.
