Artillery vehicle identification - help please
I would like to be able to identify the type of vehicle that my late father, Gnr Chandler Field Artillery, is standing in front of here, and would welcome any help. Also, I'm trying to identify the Divisional (?) symbol of diamond inside a circle on the mudguard: the badge on front says CA and 44 on the other mudguard....many thanks for any suggestions

Looks like a Chevrolet "Canadian pattern" Quad artillery tractor.

Re: Artillery vehicle identification - help please
Bob,
I am expecting the books "Gunners of Canada" this week sometime. I will look to see if the Diamond Insignia is there. Looking at the information I have for the 2nd Division, the artillery regiments, there does not appear to be a match.

I don't think that the truck is a CMP
It looks more like a British built Guy Quad-Ant FAT (Field Artillery Tractor). The horizontal bottom line of the windscreen and the distinctive wing mirrors give it away.

Re: Artillery vehicle identification - help please
Bodston has cracked it.
I've just searched on Google and found an excellent page on the 'Maple Leaf Up' forum devoted to the vehicle ( which I freely admit I'd never even heard of ).
It certainly is a Guy Quad ANT, most of which were apparently abondoned in France during 1940 and by the sound of it, the maintenance crews weren't too sorry to leave them there.....

Re: Artillery vehicle identification - help please
Actually I packed my pipes today for the house move. I counted a dozen, mostly bought by myself, others offered (and none matches my taste), a few inherited from my late father, including a lovely one with a horn mouth piece but which I found broken. When I go back to Lisbon I have to have it repaired.
My taste for the moments depends, for reading I use the 'short and curly' ones as you say, but for more activity it will have to be straight ones.
Cheers!
Miguel

Re: Artillery vehicle identification - help please
Can anyone else help ID the unit or is this going to become a silly debate on pipes?
I can't find anything relating to the Gunners that would have a "CA" plate on the front.
I wonder if it's a badly written "G" ?
Then if so "GA" makes sense.
It would be the vehicle of the Gun Position Officer (GPO) of the 1st Troop of a Battery, I believe.

Well Owen, the 44 indicates the Junior Field Artillery regt of an Infantry Division.
If that is the badge of 61st (South Midland) Inf Div. and it does look very likely. They were based in Northern Ireland. The Junior Field Regt. RA in 61st Inf. Div was 199th Field Regt. RA These dates look very late for the Guy Quad Ant tractor though.
I still have no idea as to the CA marking, all I can find refers to either Gun tractors in Medium regiments or Self Propelled Guns.
PS. I do have an inherited, straight pipe of my Fathers. I use it for emphasising a point.

Re: Artillery vehicle identification - help please
In that first link I gave on 61st Div,
61st Infantry Division (United Kingdom) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It has these RA units. - 119th Field Regt.
- 120th Field Regt.
- 145th (Buckingham and Berkshire Yeomanry) Field Regt.
- 63rd (Worcestershire and Oxfordshire Yeomanry)Anti-Tank Regt.
Which makes the 145th Feild Regt the Junior Regt.
RA 1939-45 145 Fld Rgt

Re: Artillery vehicle identification - help please
Hmm, I think that I have been led astray somewhat. Most Orders of Battle for 61st Inf. Div. show the Junior Regt to be the 145th (Buckingham and Berkshire Yeomanry) Field Regt. RA I think that may have changed fairly late in the war, 1944 ish. I think that we are safe with the 145th for the date of the photo though.
Confusing though.
Edit: Cross posted with Owen above.
