Re: Has any one read Sturmgewehr ?
Afraid I can't answer your question, uks....I have Senich's 'The German Assault Rifle 1935-1945' and figured that there's only room in my collection for one expensive Sturmgewehr book.
IMPO - and it's no criticism of the book you mentioned, which I haven't read - there is quite limited information available about the MP44 in WWII and many books seem to spread themselves a little thinly on the subject....

Just evilBayed it on a whim... never heard of it before.
'Smelt' right.

They bloody were when he bought one... The Swine!
Deacs seem to undergo yearly and noticeable price rises at beltring, could have had a reasonable MG34 for £400 first time I went; last year the only one I saw was £1300!
It was very nice though.

Re: Has any one read Sturmgewehr ?
Strewth. we met a chap in Jersey with several 'live' ones... wonder what they go for.
Maybe better to spend that on a second-hand metal detector, a spade, and a ticket to Russia?

Re: Has any one read Sturmgewehr ?
I kind of wish you hadn't mentioned that...
Amazon.co.uk: Guns of Dagenham: Lanchester, Patchett, Sterling: Peter Laidler, David Howroyd: Books
I'm a bit 'peculiar' about Lanchesters. Along with a Bren & a '34 I've wanted one since I was a kid; something about all that Brass on an SMG... Another Deac I should have bought 5+ years ago though.
Hmmm, Beltring comes though, you never know.

Re: Has any one read Sturmgewehr ?
Slightly O/T but I notice in the latest 'Armourer' magazine that someone wants £900 for a new-spec deac MP40.....

Re: Has any one read Sturmgewehr ?
'Sturmgewehr' by Hans-Dieter Handrich arrived today.
On first impressions; very high production quality, packed full of good illustrations, testing and acceptance reports aplenty, and importantly... readable.
Level of detail for the entire assault rifle programme looks superb, and I've already learnt more about the Krummlauf attachments (they fascinate, how could they not) and IR than ever before after only 10 minutes reading.
As an aside, and relating to the ongoing internet suggestion that the AK was a pretty direct copy (something I dismiss), after flicking through so many shots of the gun and despite the more telling functional differences it doesn't really even look that much like an AK... More reminiscent of later weapons like the FN/SLR without it's magazine fitted.
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: Has any one read Sturmgewehr ?
Splendid book.
I reckon it's rather hard to be genuinely interesting on such a specific subject for 600 pages, but he's pulling it off so far.
Only a third of the way through and the StG has barely had a mention yet, lots of fascinating stuff on the WWa and their testing regime, and much on requirements put on Rifles and their supply in the German military from WW1 and earlier, particularly concentrating on restrictions imposed by Versailles. The text is broken up into very short and specific headings, which works well on such a potentially dry subject.
Vollmer's significant M35 prototypes (which I'd never heard of) are dealt with in much detail and with talk of 'pressings' creeping in I'm guessing the 'main event' is about to begin.
I'd still hesitate to buy any book (that wasn't about tanks) for the full price of this one (I didn't) but it really is a fine read... only now I'm looking at their MG34/42 book and thinking 'hmmmm'...
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: Has any one read Sturmgewehr ?
I saw a copy at Beltring and it certainly is a handsome book. If I hadn't already got a copy of Senich's German Assault Rifle I may have been tempted, but as it was I passed.....

Re: Has any one read Sturmgewehr ?
In my opinion yes, if the price isn't too ridiculous ( I think mine was £35, and I've not regretted it ).
It's aimed more at the 'collector', and has lots of info and pictures of markings, accoutrements, ammunition ( including headstamps and cartons ), etc etc. The book also includes a chapter about the FG42.
It's a good one.....
