Phantom Reconnaissance
Just a while ago learnt of this.
These were British troops behind the lines in 1940 during case yellow ( attack in the west ) that radioed on the movements of the German troops.
Anyone seen a book on them or a site with some detailed info on reports, actions etc. I noted a couple of sites with info after 1940....

Phantom was and still is one of the lesser known of the wartime special regiments. It began in 1939 with the misson of finding out exactly where all allied forward positions were a task whicj required linguistic ability unlimited tact and radio expertise. After Dunkirk its squadrons at first kept an eye onall invasion points, then sent a unit to Greece, and more tothemiddle east.soon it proved an indispensable direct communication link between yje forward patrols and command headquarters. It operated in italy, sicily, austria france, belgium, holland, and germany.Phantom took the fog out of war by informing th british canadians and the americans exactly what thier forward troops were doing and the enemy's reaction.Phantom was at dieppewith the commando,in france with the sas,at arnhem with airborne and in germany until the surrender.see pantom by phillip warner higly recommended

Re: Phantom Reconnaissance
Here's a bit on the unit in general:
Phantom started out as the "Hopkinson Mission" in early 1940. Its job was to pass on intelligence to the BEF and Advanced Air Strike Force about enemy activity. The Mission was attached to the GHQ,BEF. The name was changed to Phantom sometime early in 1940 after its original unit composition.
Initially, Phantom consisted of a HQ detachment and a "Phantom Squadron." Thus, the name change. The Phantom Squardon initially consisted of two armored car troops each with three Guy armored cars and a motorcycle troop. There was also an intelligence section of 6 officers and 6 NCO intelligence specialists with motorcycles.
The network was for the armored car and motorcycle troops to report by radio or in person to the intelligence section that would then relay their findings to GHQ or the AASF.
From this Phantom grew into a complete regiment officially called "GHQ Liasion Regiment." By mid war the unit grew to 150 officers and 1500 enlisted men serving throughout the Middle East, Europe, and Italy.
