Default British "Holidays at Home" scheme.

I've just stumbled on this. Apparently the idea was to encourage the British work force to spend their meagre time off at home, instead of travelling away & using vital resources for non-essential purposes.
Every Home Front history I've ever read either hardly mentions the scheme or completely ignores it, and all I can get on the NAS site are the minutes from a few regional committtees set up to administer things.
Can anyone shed more light?

The local version of Kraft Durch Freude? We also had something like that.

Quite apart from encouraging post war British folk to spend their holidays at home the then British Government devised a fiendish scheme to discourage one from holidaying abroad.
There was a restriction on the amount of British currency that you were allowed to take abroad with you.
As an example, when my wife and I honeymooned in Deauville in Normandy in July 1949 we were only allowed to take £25.00 out of the country !
There was one advantage however.
Like most newly weds we were absolutely skint and the £25.00 figure was a great "leveller" so that one was not embarressed if you had to find the cheapest of places to eat

Not so long ago we were limited too. Under Mitterrand, we could not take more than a certain amount abroad. As a results many people spent thier holidays at home. But in fact it was ridiculous and so easy to take cash that it was abolished after a short while.

Thanks guys, especially Ron. Was it the same idea during the war, Ron?
