My Grandfather was in Hiroshima 3 days after bomb...
Recently i heard from my Mother that my Grandfather had been in Hiroshima only 3 days after the bomb. The Same day Nagasaki was hit.
My Grandfather was in the Merchant Navy. He never talked about his experiences other than the day he arrived in Hiroshima and that he brought back a tea cup as a momento. I believe at the time he was not aware of the dangers visiting a post-nuclear detenation site was. He died of a brain tumor 27 years later, he died young and my family believe his tumor was most likely caused by his visit.
Im trying to trace the boat he must have been on to go into Hiroshima and why he was actually there, or even near there as a 'merchant seaman' I cant understand it.
He apparently spoke very, very little of his WW2 experiences but he did mention visiting Hiroshima 3 days after the bomb. Im sure he wouldnt have made it up...but I dont know where to start to look into this.
Any help or ideas welcome.
