Default Looking for Info on Canadian Pilot shot down in 1940

Hi,

Am trying to help a friend who lives in Canada track down the service history of his father these are all the details I have...

His name was Joseph Samuel Bynum. He enlisted in the RCAF in Goose Bay Canada 1939 as an Artificer and later learned to be a pilot. He went to England in 1940 after flight school as a sergeant pilot and was shot down a few weeks later on an interception mission while approaching the English Channel. He left the RCAF in Feb or March 1942 - the same time as the "Eagle Squadron" pilots - to join the US Army Air Corps as a pilot officer... Later he flew in the China -Burma-India Theater and retired in a colonel in 1975 and died in 1978. I am trying to find out who he flew with and when, etc. while in the RCAF.

If someone can help or tell me where to llok I would be very greatful.

Hello, do you know when he got shot down in 1940? The date would help to find his Squadron. The type of aircraft would also help (Hurricane, Spitfire etc.) The city of his flight school or/and a base in England would also be helpful.

Mike
Try the Bombercrew.com forums. There are a lot of Canadians posting there who may have some information.

If your friend has not already tried the Canadian Genealogy Centre - Canadian National Archives to order his file, he should go to Canadian Forces after 1918 (including Second World War) - Military - What to Search: Topics - Canadian Genealogy Centre - Library and Archives Canada The site give all the information for how to order his records. It also has some links to other places to look for Canadian records. It would help, but not necesary, if your friend had his Dad's service number(s).

I finally got my Dad's records both for the Artillery WW II and RCAF 1946 to 1960. To see what I would get I ordered the genealogy package. It is pretty basic. I will probably do and Access To Infomation Privacy request as I want deeper detail such as his medical records. Hope this helps.

Michelle
