Question How to survive at 35,000 feet?

Amazon.com: Report of Joint Fighter Conference: Nas Patuxent River, MD 16-23 October 1944 (Schiffer Military History): Books: Maryland) Joint Fighter Conference (1944 Naval Air Station Patuxent River,Francis H. Dean

I was faxed awhile ago two pages from this book which describes a technique how you can survive at 35,000 feet for up to 18 minutes without extra oxygen. I just wonder if these were tested on allied pilots really? Anyone know about these tests?

Dr Commoner:

The procedure is extremely simple. All we try to do is find a way in which we could increase the total pressure in the lungs somewhat. It is very simple to do. We all know that the reason you do not get sufficient oxygen at high altitudes is not because of a reduction in the amount of oxygen, because there is still 20 percent, but because the total pressure is too low.

This will tell you how to increase the pressure in your lungs and in the procedure that was developed consists of taking a deep breath and at the peak of respiration closing off your wind system by sealing your lips and then squeezing and trying to blow out and not actually blowing it out. It is as though you took a football and hugged it. It just increases the pressure. You keep on doing that.

The whole point is this; in the low-pressure chanber at Corpus Christi we tried several hundred people and here is the information we got. At 25 to 26,000 feet pressure altitude we could train a man in a relatively short time on the ground and perhaps 30 minutes in the chamber to get along for 15 to 30 minutes without oxygen. the first minutes are the worst. If he can get the first 6 minutes, he can go on for 15 or 20 and we had people go as long as 45 minutes.None out of the several hundred had to be revived. We werenīt interested in any longevity trials, just a short-time emergency procedure. Breathing air you can survive if you know how to do it. But you must be trained.

In a Liberator at Miami, there was a man who handled it correctly for 18 minutes at 35,000 feet without oxygen."

Most likely the Nazis tried this experiment in the concentration camps...

If it was done in Corpus Christi, then it was conducted by the US Navy at the Naval Air Station. They train new pilots there.

It would be a tough trick to do since it is so cold at 35000 feet, plus fly the plane, plus do the breathing trick, plus having a decompression at 35000 feet would be exciting enough event all by it's self.

As a side note I read that blood will boil in your body at the 60000 feet level with no pressurization. I think it happened to an F-104 pilot whose engine stalled out at that level.

Itīs ok with me that Carlīs No 1 but if he does not look in the rear view mirror careful enough...oops...
