Default searching for information on Grandpa - Marines 1943-1945

Greetings All,
I began my research on my Grandpa recently. I'm finding more questions than answers as he did not talk about his experience as a marine at all. I'm hoping that someone may have some answers or leads.

I want to thank you in advance for any help and/or guidance you may provide.

What I do know. My Grandpa enlisted in May 1943. His principal military duty was a cook. discharged from Hq. SQ. M.A.G. 53, M.C.A.S Eagle Mt. Lake, Texas. also stated: Battles, engagements, skirmishes, expeditions: Guam

Question: there was approximately a year from the time he enlisted to the Battles, engagement (Guam) that is listed on his discharge. I would like to better understand what and where he was in that time frame. I searched on the MAG 53 and it led me to Bougainville during that year in question.

Question: If MAG 53 MCAS is listed on his discharge papers would that be the group that he was in at the beginning of his marine experience?

Question: I would like to understand the duties of a cook as well as Corporal Temporary aviation duty (that was noted at time of discharge)

Thanks again,
Exprsso

The discharge papers would show the last unit he was with. Apparently, he spent his entire service with the Marines in MAG 53. Naval (and by extension Marine) aviation units have home station that is their "official" location. They are not necessarily there when people get discharged. An example might be a Marine squadron assigned aboard a carrier. The squadron is part of the air group and not considered ship's company. Therefore a discharge would show that the person was discharged from the squadron's home air base not the carrier.
I don't know right off the units that made up MAG 53 so I can't help you right away with a potential list of places this unit served. Maybe something in a few days.
I know that isn't all that helpful but I'll see if I can fill things out a bit.
