Soviet Baltic Fleet
Once the siege of Leningrad was over, the Fleet was getting free to move. How many of the ships truly were used in combat later on? Especially the cruisers and battle ships?? For instance against Kourland the Fleet could have acted and attacked in the back, I think.

Re: Soviet Baltic Fleet
Everything I've read said the Soviet Fleet[or what was left of it] never sailed again. With the exception of their submarines.
Instead, the Prinz Eugen had a free hand at the battle of Kurland.

Re: Soviet Baltic Fleet
I did read once that the problem was that the navy men were put to the front and there was no time to train new men to sail the navy. Don´t know how close to the truth this is but so far the only reason I have found out. Any help is welcome.

Re: Soviet Baltic Fleet
I have a good book on battleships of the period. I will look again, but I think all of their ships of this type were either sitting on the their bottoms or were so wrecked topside to be of no operational use.

Re: Soviet Baltic Fleet
The Baltic Fleet late in the war consisted almost entirely of small craft and submarines as operational units. The larger ships were either sunk or laid up at Kronstadt or Leningrad. None of the pre-war cruisers or battleships were operational in the Baltic during the war.
Aside from that, the numerous torpedo boats and small submarines that were operational had an absolutely dismal record of operations. The Red Army won their war; the Red Navy lost theirs.

Re: Soviet Baltic Fleet
agreed the Soviet torpedo boats in more times than can count lost the battle with the KM S-boots, they did however play some role on the evacuation of the Baltic in spring of 45 along with Soviet subs

Re: Soviet Baltic Fleet
maybe Za there seemed to be quite a buzz early war when the Black Sea saw the effects of the KM S-boot arm, driven by truck, rail and built on the shores and then released, evidently the Wehrmacht high command felt the Flottilles were needed here in a big way....

Re: Soviet Baltic Fleet
got a copy of the rare little booklet Schwarze Nächte im Schwarzen Meer - Sboat S-42, and the S-199 along with the 1st S-boot Flottille
Schicksale Deutscher Schiffe from Moewig-Verlag im München who did some 100 plus very small 50 page types of books. In this case the Black seas fleet seemed to be pretty intense on securing the black sea over all and then onto the Baltic, wishing to bomb blast it off the face of the earth and then secure it totally for very large sea bases
