As for internet sources, they vary as you say. There is one French site however that I feel is decent and simple enough to follow. Hope this helps:

Ordre de bataille de l'Armée de Terre, 10 mai 1940

As for book sources, while Osprey Men-at-Arms series tend to be general in information, the one on the French Army of WW 2 (two parts, #1 and #2) are actually very good. Both contain very detailed French order of battles for 1939-1940 (1st volume) and Free French 1940-1945 (2nd volume). The series numbers for these two books are #315 and #318.

Doh! I should have realized I was refering you to the same site! Sorry!

Perhaps a forum on the subject would help? Surely some of the members here would know, or at least know where to direct you.

This is associated with the chaps above & always looks pretty good to me:

I'm sure there was an English version of this page but can't find it now Though google's Translator makes a pretty good fist of it:
Armée de Terre Française 1940
The drop down menus lead to some interesting stuff.

This might be worth a shufti too:

Cheers,
Adam.

This site looked like it had some promise but I don't know when it was last updated or if the person will be doing so .

How much detail do you want?

There is a series of about half a dozen books covering this subject in detail by Lee Sharp but they are expensive if you need all of them.

Or you could put your faith in good old George Nafziger.

FRENCH ORDER OF BATTLE IN WWII/: Nafziger. 95p LF - Organisational history of the French divisions

You should be able to get this for about $25 or £15 or E20

Or you could try a wargamers resource/army list there are lots of those.
