Question Whose Knight“s Cross?

Nazi medal sells for $18k at Brisbane auction

Nov 18, 2007

A man has paid $18,000 for a World War II Nazi medal at a charity auction in Brisbane today.

Only 150 of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords were awarded to German officers during World War II.

Buyer Clive Palmer says he does not believe the $18,000 price tag is excessive.

"I don't believe it is a lot of money because it's equivalent to the VC in our award history and the VC will sell for over half a million dollars," he said.

"Certainly in Germany there was only 150 awarded of the 170 that were made.

"Of those about 50 per cent were lost in the aftermath of World War II so it's a very rare medal and it's good to find it in Brisbane."

Wonder if anyone has found out whose medal this is? Thanx for any info!

And I wonder if the original owner or his estate was paid for it?

Interesting news. Also, some of that buyers info is terribly wrong on numbers. Anyway, he made a damn good buy at that price. When I was visiting Horst Bredow at his Uboat Archiv in Altenbruch back in 2000. He allowed myself and my friend to handle a set of Wolfgang Luth's oaks, swords and diamonds. And no, that was not a one-of-a-kind item like you might think. Luth had more than one extra set made but, being that these were his-made them all that much more special. At that time, it was estimated that this extra set of oaks, swords and diamonds-was worth over $1 million Dollars or approx 3 million DM.
