Re: I have a report JFK WWII
here is a website dedicated to JFK and his PT-109 incident.
John F. Kennedy and PT109 - John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum
and here is the reports on the destroyer
Around 2 a.m., according to Navy reports, the Japanese destroyer Amagiri was speeding through the area. It's unclear if the destroyer deliberately rammed PT-109. In the dark of the night, it may not have seen the small boat, which was less than 90 feet long.
HOWEVER

There have been many high school and college students who have joined this forum seeking information and were able to demonstrate that they had done the work required by the assignment and were consulting us for another source or sources. We were more than happy to help them.

Re: I have a report JFK WWII
Well, I can tell you what almost happened afterward, he faced a general court martial which Halsey and MacArthur were in favor of for loosing two men and the boat. His Dad got involved back home and turned it into a story for the press.
A late friend of mine who was a member of that squadron relayed to me that the general thinking was, Lt. jg had become separated from the patrol group on his first combat mission, had become disoriented in the dark, ordered the engines out of gear, and was adrift at the time of collision. Not quite what had been portrayed in the 1963 film.

Re: I have a report JFK WWII
I have to agree with Jeff. Too many requests for members to do legwork for student assignments. Rather defeats the object of personal research - which is a LOT more than finding the nearest Forum and shouting "HELP!!" Yes, there are events where information may be diffiicult to find but PT-109? Come on, B-17engineer, it's one of the most famous incidents of WWII. Google "pt 109" and you get 3.25 million hits!
Fellow members, sorry for the rant. Sometimes, things just need pointing out.

I guess that depends on your part of the world, in Australia we arn't taught much about other countries in the wars just the basics, more about australian's then anything, I was never taught about Pt190 or JFK, frankly he means nothing to me cause I am not american, this guy seems young so maybe we should go a little easier on him.

Re: I have a report JFK WWII
You must remember that even most of us here(except the ww2 veterans) are getting information from another source such as websites, books, documentarys' and so on, so crediting any one here for finding information that was accessable to you just isn't right. But we are always ready to assist you but with limits.
oh and sorry Slipdigit for not putting your name on the quote.

Hey Jeff, do we have that many requests of this kind? Must be, for a 14-post member to protest so bitterly

Re: I have a report JFK WWII
tomcat - point taken. FYI, I didn't learn about PT-109 in school either. It's just a part of my overall knowledge. Nevertheless, apologies for going OTT.
Sorry, B-17engineer. the tone of my post may have appeared rude - not intended. Your post seemed to imply that you had not searched for anything about PT-109 - What happened to JFK when his PT-109 was rammed... - in your later post you clarify that it was really the name of the destroyer that you had had difficulty in finding.

My experiences with military documentary's have proven they are not always right and the historians presenting, push there own opinions to be as fact and if you don't know the truth already you think they are telling facts.
But being from you Slipdigit I'll trust ya
and nice info on the Amagiri.

I would have preferred a source published in a book, but since he didn't ask for one.
I didn't think that his teacher would accept me as a source, that was one ships whose name I could remember.
