Help! I need answers to these questions for a book being written!
Hi Diane,
I've started on chapter 15, partly due to your 'nagging', so it's
your own fault if research questions are thrown up now!!!! :-)
1) I need to know please, how many British bombers were lost in the
first bombing raid on Berlin on 25/26th August 1940? Only this raid
please, and, if you can, what British Squadrons were involved? Was
there any news reporting or public government comment on this raid?
2) For the future, I'll need later to have info on the first 1,000-
bomber raid on Berlin in 1942: the RAF squadrons involved, types of
aircraft and casualties amongst the bombers.
Also, flying time from England to Berlin on that raid, tonnage of
bombs dropped, any announcements/ news reporting of the raid in
England. Also what route did the bomber squadrons take on the 1000-
bomber raid and what main German anti-aircraft clusters (flak) did
they have to pass over. What German fighter attacks did they suffer on
the way out? Any descriptions of the air battles involved, the time
over the target, aircraft going down etc, would be good. Tere's plenty
of time for answers to this second question, as it's a couple of
chapters away yet . . . but some of the stuff you find for question 1
may have links to this that you can use while you're at it.
Good hunting!
Roy

Re: Help! I need answers to these questions for a book being written!
Middlebrook in Bomber Command War Diaries gives a figure of approxmately 50 aircraft of which 6 were lost mostly due to lack of fuel. The aircraft involved were Hampdens and Wellingtons.
A 1000 bomber raid on Berlin in 42? I don't see one listed. Cologne, Essen, Bremen, and Duisburg but not Berlin.

Not sure who 'Diane' is, but....
TA Gardner is right, there was no 'Thousand Plan' for Berlin and certainly not in 1942 ; Bomber Command simply didn't have the strength.
The main Bomber Command assault on Berlin did not commence until 18th November 1943 and lasted until 24th March 1944. The largest number of bombers dispatched on a single raid during this period was 891 on the night of 15/16 February 1944.
For a concise discussion of Berlin as a Bomber Command target, I'd recommend Air Commodore John Searby's 'The Bomber Battle For Berlin' ( Airlife 1991 ).

I really must learn.
Maybe I'll try 'writing some lines'....
I mustn't spend time helping people who post once and don't bother with 'thank you'.

I know the feeling......
Even more annoying, in my experience, are the folk that send one an e-mail requesting sheafs of information and then lack the courtesy of even an acknowledgement.
I have a sub-folder in my Outlook Express Inbox marked "Waiting reply" and every so often I open it up just to have a glower at the contents
Cheers
Ron
