Default HMS Centaur

G'day one and all

Ok I am looking for a ship named the HMS Centaur that was part of the Royal Navy during ww2. I am told her fate was due to a torpedo from a uboat struck midship, breaking her back and sinking her with all hands, I have also been told that she was a battleship.

Now my knowledge with teh RN is limited but I am sure that other then the HMS Royal Oak being sunk by Gunther Prien, no RN Battleship was sunk due to torpedo's, I have also never heard of the HMS Centaur being a battleship but a crusier, but can find no information on either of them.

I have found the HMS Centaur the Carrier completed after ww2.
THe hospital ship HMS Centaur.
THe post ww1 Light Crusier Centaur sold for scrap.

HOwever no HMS Centaur during ww2, does anyone have any information of this?

Default Re: HMS Centaur

Wish I could help tomcat. I come up with nothing on it . Just this,

HMS Centaur was a C class cruiser and lead ship of the Centaur- subclass. She was launched in 1916 and sold for scrap in 1934.
HMS Centaur was to have been a C class destroyer. She was ordered in 1942, but was subsequently redesigned as a Weapon class destroyer and renamed HMS Tomahawk in 1943. She was eventually launched in 1946 as HMS Scorpion.
HMS Centaur was a Centaur class aircraft carrier, launched in 1947 and scrapped in 1970

Unhappy Re: HMS Centaur

I think the name must be incorrect, tomcat. I'm no RN expert but I've read a fair bit, and haven't come across a Naval ship of that name seeing action in WWII......
