Vickers Wellington in Antisubmarine action

Provided with a circular antenna, possibly for the the detection of submerged ships.....

Re: Vickers Wellington in Antisubmarine action
I may be wrong but I have a feeling that the large ring was for electromagnetic detonation of anti-shipping mines. Not a detector.

Here we go

the Wellington still had important duties to fulfil for Coastal Command. Wellingtons were first fitted with Degaussing devices to detonate magnetic mines. These devices were large metal rings, first 52 ft (15,85 m) in diameter and later 48 ft (14,63 m), with a coil. This coil was powered by a separate engine on board of the mother aircraft, and created a strong magnetic field. The first of such operations started in early 1940.

Re: Vickers Wellington in Antisubmarine action
The JU-52 was used for aerial minesweeping too.
Junkers Ju 52/3m g4e (MS)
This version was converted for Mine-sweeping duties. For that reason it was fitted with a large Dural hoop braced beneath the wing and fuselage. This hoop was than energised by an additional motor that was installed in the fuselage. The magnetic field that was generated that way, triggered magnetically fused mines.

Fly at very low cota/heigth and big velocity, I think....
Anyone know a site web explain this matters?
