At the end of 1930 the SA had become a major problem for Hitler.It had grown out-of-control. The inevitable confrontation broke out in mid-1930, when the SA deputy commander demanded that Hitler reduce Party interference in SA affairs. Hitler refused, brought back Ernst Röhm to replace Ernst von Salomon, the SA commander. Hitler demanded that the SA members swear an oath of allegiance to him. They refused, and by the new year air was again thick with rumours of a plot against the leader, but when the SA attempted to take over the party in April 1931, the rank and file remained loyal to Hitler and the rebellion melted away.

So the SA had tried once to take over the party before the night of the long knives? This would explain how easily Hitler believed that Röhm would try the same.

Anyone know about Ernst von Salomon as there is not much in the net about him and his life and political views. His view of Röhm and was Röhm his enemy/friend?
