Default trying to trace fate of a flier

A passionate hobby of mine is to record and save the stories of veterans, so their story is permanently recorded and never to be lost of forgotten. I am trying to help bring closure for a veteran I interviewed. He was part of the invasion of Sicily and told of a time when they were at a camp that must have had a arms depot. He said out of the sky came an American plane that crash landed into a pile of shells near him. He ran up to see if he could help the flier. All he remembers is looking at his dog tag and seeing Lt. Goldberg, Buffalo, NY. He said everyone started yelling at him to get away as it could blow at any minute. He got away and he said he then passed out. He never learned the fate of that flier and he says it has always haunted him. It now haunts me and I want to try and find some answers for him. Any ideas on where I might start trying to track this information down?
Thanks,
Brad

With the help of David Valenzuela of the Buffalo News, I found out his fate. He was August Goldenberg, not Goldberg. He died that day in that crash. Hopefully now after 65 years, Loren can find some peace with that day.
