Thanks Martin, nice to be back, it has taken me a while but I am back into living history and this weekend will be a performance for a museum. A small do but a significant one.
As to what I've been up to...went straight into another job when I got back to Australia and didn't have much time to do anything WW2 except increase my ww2 photo and medal collection. Have I missed much?

Ohhh, errr...let's see - the Forums almost disappeared from sight, then rallied and came back stronger than ever....we had the D-Day and Arnhem commemorations, some good stuff about the Falaise Gap, some of us have visited various battlefields over the summer, CrazyD reappeared and immediately started making postings about Tiger tanks , Stefan has valiantly tried to keep the re-enactment threads going, and we're looking forward to some stimulating discussion about the Bulge as the 60th looms up in December.....As I said, good to have you back !

Just an idea, BDS - you may find it interesting to browse among the threads on the Curio & Relic Firearms Forum - they have a special area for Swedish Rifles ; -

I ain't a fan of Swedish mausers, they just look, well, weird. On the other hand, that one is particularly pretty so nice one!
Anyhow, welcome back, it's been quiet without you. I have been away a lot (work, cadets and now university) but rest assured things are still going!

She may be wierd but she fires like a beauty. My one requirement was flexibility, I wanted to be good on a range AND use it for medium range reenactment. German Mausers, in my opinion, esp the later ones were built under appauling conditions that may have affected their performance. Martin...man you are killing me...ANOTHER forum...my wife is never going to see me

Yeah, but I mean weird in that they don't look like German mausers. The furniture just isn't the same as the German ones and the bolt is a different shape, as is the muzzle.

Stefan,
Went to a gun shop today and checked out a
K-98k, it has a few remaining waffen-amts on it but mostly israeli markings now, also the metal has a dull green coat on it and the barrel is obviously worn.
I was, however, surprised at the difference in weight with the K98 and the m96/8 that I have at home. Also the quality of the bolt mechanism was quite loose and shabby compared to the m96/8 of virtually the same year vintage. I know one has been to war and the other probably hasn't but I'm convinced which is the better made rifle.
Still I'm thinking of getting it, what do you think for $AUS 300?

A K98 for £121 stirling, sounds good to me! I would probably go for it, funnily enough most of the Mauser bolts I have encountered were rather 'loose' compared to other rifles. It came as quite a surprise at first but now I am growing used to it.
I don't have anything against the M96 per se, it just ain't a ww2 German rifle. It would be sort of like using an AK47 as an stg44 (which I have seen done). Though as a range weapon, I would go for the M96 for obvious reasons, if you can get both, take both.
Incidentally, am I the only one constantly being struck by the irony of waffenampt Isralie K98's?

the Karabiner 98 after late 43 is crap. Mine is a marked ar 42 and the barrel and bolt set-up are tight and clean and it is a dream to shoot. Please check the other K98 thread that is up and read/see my comments. If anything check the barrel with a bore-light and the rifle may need just a good overall tune up with cleaning being the major point of importance.
