For the second year in a row, the weather was incredibly kind for the final UK Airshow of the season at Duxford. As it's the Spitfire's 70th Birthday this year, no apologies for the Spit flavour to these images from yesterday's show ; -
The morning mist is just clearing with a Curtiss Hawk 75 and Fieseler Storch ( note the Spitfire getting airborne in the background )
Famous MkIX Spitfire MH434 being readied inside one of Duxford's equally famous WWI-era hangars ; while out on the flightline.....
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's clipped-wing MkIX arrives.
Somehow it's nice that many of the pilots use WWII-era kit when flying.
Their numbers may be thinning fast, but here are two real RAF veterans in deep discussion ; (left) 'Billy' Drake DSO DFC*, Hurricane pilot with No. 1 Squadron in the Battle of France and on the right, Tom Neil DFC*. a Battle of Britain ace with 249 Squadron ( Hurricanes )
A sight and sound which never fails to stir the emotions, especially over Duxford which is where the Spitfire entered operational service.
The finale with eight Spitfires taking to the air together was quite superb.....a very nice day indeed !

Great shots, Martin!
You can almost see the 'erks' running around in the background.

Good to see the Curtiss Hawk and I like the way it is painted ! I did not know any were flying. You can really see the P-40 lines from the angle of the picture you took.

The Hawk is owned and operated by the Duxford-based Fighter Collection. It is known to have been delivered to the Armee de l'Air in April 1939 and was based at Toul during the Battle of France.

About 25 in all, including this ; one of the more unusual pairings seen at Duxford....

Sad to say, I was on holiday and missed that one which I know was a classic.
Interesting to see this thread re-emerge, made me feel quite nostalgic ; that October show was so good ! Roll on next May and the new Season....

@ Ta : the hawk has just been repaired to flying conditions in 2005, AFAIK it's a genuine French hawk which saw combat in 1940.
