Re: My Ardennes Trip, Feb '08.
Tuesday we headed off to the British area of the Bulge battlefield calling in to see the Panther of the 2nd SS Panzer Division at Grandmesnil.
As you can see it was a glorious day of winter sunshine.

On the road to Laroche from Hotton I was able to do this 1940 Then & Now too.

Re: My Ardennes Trip, Feb '08.
Not far from the 51st Highland Memorial is "Northampton", an Achilles, of the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry.
Viewed from the castle "Northampton" is just under the white "X".

Not far from the Sherman is the memorial to the link up between the British 51st Highland and American 84th Divisions.

Re: My Ardennes Trip, Feb '08.
Lienne Creek.
On the Trail of Kampfgruppe Peip
Quote:
Peiper's column was delayed by air attacks, and it was dark by the time his tanks wound their way down the hill toward the bridge over the Lienne creek. Another squad of the 291st Engineer Combat Battalion had beaten him there and prepared the wooden Neufmolin bridge for demolition, and blew it when the Germans were about 100 meters away. This is the location where Peiper is said to have cried in frustration, "The damned engineers! The damned engineers!"

Re: My Ardennes Trip, Feb '08.
Great stuff WW, love the King Tiger. Strange how on all the tanks you see clusters of peppering by small-arms etc, you can just imagine some panicked machine gunner blazing ineffectually at the side of the tank.
Again, great stuff and thanks for posting.

Re: My Ardennes Trip, Feb '08.
Hi Wessex, thank you very much for sharing these photo's as well as the information you provided.
On that War Memorial above-the one with the approximately: 141 names of G.I's killed in the area, I know at least 2-3 of these men killed there, are from my hometown as their names are on our War Memorial located there at the County Courthouse. There was many-a-time when I would stop by and pay these Gents my fullest respect. In total for WWII, the losses of our guys killed in action through WWII are about 300-many were killed both at Pearl Harbor and in the Battle of the Bulge.
I have not thought much about this in years, thanks for bringing it back to the forfront of my thoughts and memories.
Take care and best Regards--Carl.

Hi Wessex some great pictures here, the tanks are really well preserved and restored with love by the Belgians. Some canons and a great Halftrack too. I love the left hand drive notice!
I see you are getting hooked up to the now and thens too. Good work. You must either have a patient or passionate familly to be able to come back with so many pictures.

Re: My Ardennes Trip, Feb '08.
Wow, WW!
All these great pics made me feel as if I was there myself! I have to admit seeing the damage done to the tanks got to me a little bit. Especially the Sherman with the gaping hole in the front. It made me think of the brave men who fought inside of it.
Thanks again!
